Not every chef gets the spotlight on the world stage, but Ash Valenzuela-Heeger has proven that talent, passion, and determination can put you on the map.
The South African-born culinary artist is making a name for herself in the international food scene, earning one of the most prestigious honors in the industry.
Michelin Guide’s Young Chef Award 2025
Ash has been awarded the Michelin Guide’s Young Chef Award for 2025, a recognition that is only given to the most outstanding young chefs worldwide.
This accolade, which celebrates chefs under 36, highlights not just her technical expertise but also her creativity and leadership in the kitchen.
According to Eat Out, Ash’s win has been met with excitement and pride from South Africa’s culinary community.
Her work has caught the attention of Michelin inspectors, who are known for their meticulous and secretive evaluation process.
They look at everything—from technique and consistency to innovation and the chef’s ability to express themselves through their dishes.
South African Roots and a Passion for Cooking
Ash’s culinary journey started in Cape Town, where she trained at The Test Kitchen, one of South Africa’s most celebrated restaurants.
She honed her craft alongside the acclaimed Luke Dale Roberts, gaining invaluable experience during the restaurant’s formative years.
In 2016, she took a bold step by opening her own restaurant, ASH, which focused on live-fire cooking.
This concept later evolved into Riverine Rabbit in 2018, offering a more refined dining experience.
However, in 2020, Ash made the difficult decision to close her restaurant and move to the UK to be with her partner.
She shared her heartfelt decision on Instagram, reflecting on her growth as a leader, mentor, and chef.
Food lovers may also recognize Ash from her appearance on Netflix’s The Final Table, where she showcased her culinary prowess to a global audience.
A New Chapter in the UK
After relocating to the UK with her wife, Erin, Ash didn’t leave her passion for cooking behind.
Instead, the couple launched a series of pop-up dining experiences, introducing British food lovers to Ash’s unique and innovative approach to cuisine.
These pop-ups paved the way for the permanent opening of Riverine Rabbit in Birmingham, which quickly gained a loyal following for its inventive flavors and bold techniques.
Earlier this year, the restaurant received the Michelin Bib Gourmand, an award recognizing exceptional food at great value.
Unlike Michelin Stars, the Bib Gourmand highlights restaurants that offer outstanding meals without the high-end price tag.
Rising Star in the Culinary World
Upon receiving the Michelin Young Chef Award, Ash humorously remarked, “I’m not sure how young I am anymore, but I’m pleased—thank you very much!”
The Michelin Guide website commended her for her bold flavors and creative approach to cuisine.
It noted that Ash had already been making waves in Birmingham’s food scene through her pop-ups before opening Riverine Rabbit, which has now cemented itself as a must-visit dining destination.
Her cooking draws inspiration from her South African heritage while incorporating global influences, particularly from Asia.
From her early days in Cape Town’s vibrant culinary landscape to her current success in the UK, Ash Valenzuela-Heeger is a testament to the growing global influence of South African chefs.
With her talent and innovation, it’s exciting to imagine what she’ll do next.
