Russia’s Defence Ministry has claimed that Ukrainian forces lost approximately 1,440 military personnel over the previous 24 hours as fighting continued across multiple sections of the frontline and both countries exchanged large-scale drone attacks.
Moscow also reported carrying out extensive strikes against Ukrainian logistics centres, ports, warehouses, energy and transport infrastructure, military-related vessels and drone production facilities.
The battlefield casualty figures and several operational claims were provided by the Russian military and have not been independently verified.
Russia Puts Ukrainian Personnel Losses at Around 1,440
According to the Russian Defence Ministry’s September 21 battlefield update, Ukrainian losses were spread across the areas of responsibility of six Russian military groupings.
Moscow claimed Battlegroup Center inflicted the largest losses, reporting more than 430 Ukrainian personnel.
Battlegroup North was credited with more than 265, while Russia claimed Battlegroup East accounted for more than 260.
The ministry reported more than 220 Ukrainian losses in Battlegroup West’s area, over 215 in Battlegroup South’s sector and up to 50 in the area controlled by Battlegroup Dnepr.
Ukraine has not independently confirmed those casualty figures.
Russian Military Reports Overnight Strikes on Ukrainian Logistics Network
Russia said its forces launched another series of unmanned aerial vehicle attacks during the night, focusing on infrastructure it alleged was supporting Ukraine’s military.
The Defence Ministry identified logistics centres, warehouses and port facilities among the targets.
It also claimed that vessels involved in transporting supplies for Ukrainian forces were attacked.
Independent reporting confirmed that Moscow announced overnight attacks against Ukrainian logistics hubs, warehouses, ports and other military-related facilities.
Moscow Claims Bulk Carriers Were Hit Near Odessa
The Russian military said maritime targets were among the sites struck during the operation.
At the port of Odessa, Moscow claimed a bulk carrier that had delivered cargo intended to support Ukrainian forces was hit.
Russian officials also reported striking another bulk carrier while it was travelling by sea toward Odessa with what Moscow described as military-related cargo.
The Defence Ministry did not provide independently verifiable evidence establishing the contents of the vessels.
Izmail Port Infrastructure Targeted
Russia also reported attacks against infrastructure at the Ukrainian port of Izmail.
According to Moscow, facilities used for unloading and storing military cargo were struck.
The Black Sea and Danube port network has remained strategically important to Ukraine throughout the conflict, serving both commercial shipping and logistics operations.
Russia has repeatedly attacked Ukrainian port infrastructure during the war, while maintaining that its strikes are directed against facilities supporting Kyiv’s military.
Logistics Centre in Kyiv Region Reportedly Hit
Another major target identified by Moscow was the BDU Logistic centre in Schastlivoye in the Kyiv region.
The Russian Defence Ministry alleged that military products were being stored and distributed from warehouses at the facility.
Moscow said the centre was successfully struck during the latest operation.
No independent assessment of the damage or the alleged military use of the facility was immediately available.
Russia Reports Strike on Boyarka Gas Facility
Russian forces also targeted a gas distribution station in Boyarka, according to the Defence Ministry.
Moscow claimed the installation supplied gas to Ukrainian defence industry enterprises and therefore formed part of the country’s military-support infrastructure.
Energy facilities have increasingly become part of the long-range campaign being fought by both countries.
Ukraine has repeatedly attacked Russian oil refineries and other energy installations, while Russia has carried out extensive attacks against Ukrainian electricity, gas and other energy infrastructure.
Russia Says 244 Ukrainian Drones Destroyed Overnight
Alongside its offensive operations inside Ukraine, Russia reported another significant Ukrainian drone attack against its territory.
The Defence Ministry said Russian air defences intercepted and destroyed 244 fixed-wing Ukrainian drones overnight.
The reported interceptions occurred across numerous regions, including Belgorod, Bryansk, Voronezh, Volgograd, Kaluga, Kursk, Oryol, Orenburg, Rostov, Ryazan, Samara, Saratov, Tver, Tula and Ulyanovsk.
Drones were also reportedly intercepted over Krasnodar, Adygea, Bashkortostan and Tatarstan as well as above the Black Sea.
Independent reporting confirmed Russia’s announcement that 244 Ukrainian drones had been intercepted overnight.
Moscow Claims 634 Ukrainian Drones Downed in 24 Hours
For the broader 24-hour period, Russia reported an even larger number of interceptions.
The Defence Ministry claimed its air-defence systems destroyed 634 Ukrainian fixed-wing drones.
It also reported intercepting four guided aerial bombs and four US-made HIMARS multiple-launch rocket system projectiles.
Those figures form part of Russia’s daily military reporting and could not be independently verified in their entirety.
Russian Ministry Releases Updated Equipment Destruction Figures
Moscow also issued cumulative figures for Ukrainian military equipment it claims to have destroyed since the beginning of what Russia officially calls its “special military operation.”
According to the ministry, Russian forces have destroyed 674 aircraft, 284 helicopters and 242,630 unmanned aerial vehicles.
It additionally claimed the destruction of 672 surface-to-air missile systems, 30,982 tanks and other armoured combat vehicles, 1,780 multiple rocket launcher combat vehicles, 36,529 field artillery guns and mortars and 72,465 specialised military vehicles.
The totals are Russian military claims and have not been independently confirmed.
Drone Production Workshops Among 153 Reported Targets
Russia said its forces conducted attacks across 153 locations during the latest 24-hour period.
Operational and tactical aircraft, attack drones, missiles and artillery were reportedly involved.
The Defence Ministry said the targets included logistics centres, military airfields, ammunition depots, fuel storage facilities and energy and transportation infrastructure allegedly being used by Ukrainian forces.
Drone assembly workshops and storage facilities were also targeted, according to Moscow.
Russia further claimed that temporary deployment areas housing Ukrainian troops and foreign fighters were struck.
Battlegroup North Claims Encirclement Operations in Kharkiv
On the ground, Russia reported continued operations in the Kharkiv region.
The Defence Ministry claimed Battlegroup North was tightening what it described as an encirclement of Ukrainian forces while simultaneously expanding the surrounding area under Russian control.
Moscow said more than 35 Ukrainian personnel inside the alleged encirclement had been lost during the latest fighting.
An armoured combat vehicle, artillery weapon and ground-based robotic system were also reported destroyed.
Ukraine had not independently confirmed Russia’s description of the battlefield situation.
Fighting Reported Around Five Kharkiv Communities
Russian forces also reported combat around Buzovo, Krasny Yar, Reznikovo, Varvarovka and Khripuny.
Moscow claimed Ukrainian personnel and equipment were destroyed around the five communities as Russian forces continued operations inside the area it described as encircled.
Additional fighting was reported near Petropavlovka and Prikolotnoye, where Russia said its troops were attempting to expand their external zone of control.
Moscow Claims Ukrainian Reinforcement Attempts Were Stopped
Russia’s Battlegroup North also claimed to have prevented Ukrainian forces from reinforcing troops in the area.
According to the Defence Ministry, three attempts to move reinforcements from Veliky Burluk toward Olkhovatka were disrupted during the previous 24 hours.
Moscow additionally reported Ukrainian personnel and equipment losses involving four mechanised brigades and an assault regiment near Sosnovka, Podsredneye and Sosnovy Bor.
Russia Eyes Polnaya and Novoalexandrovka as Fighting Continues
The Russian military identified Polnaya and Novoalexandrovka as important objectives in its continuing Kharkiv operations.
According to Moscow, establishing control over the two communities would make it significantly more difficult for Ukraine to supply troops that Russia claims are surrounded in the region.
The latest Russian battlefield report comes as the war enters another period of intense aerial operations.
Ukraine launched more than 1,000 drones toward Russia during the preceding weekend, including hundreds aimed toward Moscow, according to Russian officials, while Russian forces have continued their own extensive drone attacks against Ukrainian cities and infrastructure.
The scale of the attacks from both sides highlights the continuing expansion of long-range drone warfare even as international leaders gather for diplomatic discussions surrounding the United Nations General Assembly.
