Police have arrested nine foreign nationals following an intelligence-led operation at a biscuit manufacturing factory in Reitz, located in South Africa’s Free State province.
The arrests were made as authorities carried out inspections at the facility, with immigration and regulatory checks continuing after the operation.
Immigration Verification Process Underway
Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Mmako Mophiring said officials are completing the required immigration verification and administrative procedures involving the detained individuals.
According to Mophiring, the operation was based on intelligence gathered by law enforcement, leading officers to conduct the inspection at the factory premises.
Factory Expected to Shut While Investigation Continues
Authorities have engaged the local municipality as part of the ongoing investigation, with the biscuit factory expected to cease operations while inquiries are carried out.
The temporary closure is intended to allow investigators to examine the circumstances surrounding the operation and determine whether any legal or regulatory breaches occurred.
Factory Owner Could Face Additional Legal Action
Police said they are also assessing whether further action should be taken against the factory owner.
According to Mophiring, authorities are investigating allegations that the business may have failed to comply with applicable legislation. Any potential enforcement measures will depend on the outcome of the ongoing investigation.
