Hayden Panettiere’s death has reportedly opened a new chapter in the long-running conflict between the actress and her estranged mother, Lesley Vogel, with tensions now surrounding plans for the actress’s funeral.

A television insider familiar with both women has claimed that Vogel intends to play a major role in arranging the farewell, prompting concern among people close to Panettiere who believe the actress’s own wishes should take priority.

“Everyone needs to put their personal history aside and ask one question: What would Hayden have wanted?” the source told entertainment columnist Rob Shuter for his Naughty But Nice Substack.

The insider added that while Vogel is Panettiere’s mother, the history between them should not be overlooked when decisions are being made about the actress’s final arrangements.

A Relationship Marked by Years of Conflict

The reported funeral dispute comes only months after Vogel publicly defended her decision to remain estranged from her daughter.

In May, she said she had chosen what she described as the “no-contact route” after years of turmoil, claiming she had reached the decision on professional advice.

“You cannot save someone who does not want to be saved,” Vogel said at the time.

She also described their separation as the result of roughly two decades of “trauma, chaos, addictions” and accusations, insisting that she believed she had no other option.

Panettiere and her mother were not publicly known to have repaired their relationship before the actress’s death.

Panettiere’s Memoir Exposed the Family Rift

Much of the tension between the pair became public through Panettiere’s memoir, This Is Me: A Reckoning, in which the actress detailed what she described as a deeply complicated childhood relationship with Vogel.

Panettiere portrayed her mother not simply as a parent but as a demanding manager who played a central role in transforming her into a successful child performer.

She began working in entertainment before she was a year old and quickly progressed from commercials to television roles.

By the age of five, she had appeared in recurring roles on shows including One Life to Live and Guiding Light.

The actress later became internationally recognized through roles in Heroes and Nashville, but she said the pressures associated with achieving that success had lasting consequences for her personal life.

Actress Recalled Feeling Pressure From Her Mother

One of the most striking memories in Panettiere’s memoir involved a childhood audition for a Kodak advertisement.

She recalled freezing during the audition and becoming more frightened about telling her mother that she had failed than about the audition itself.

Panettiere described Vogel as a perfectionist who expected her daughter to perform at the highest possible level.

She also recalled becoming acutely aware of her mother’s changing expressions of anger.

Another incident described in the memoir involved a lost tooth shortly before an audition.

Panettiere wrote that Vogel used superglue to attach the tooth to a retainer so that her daughter could continue with her professional commitments.

The stories formed part of Panettiere’s broader argument that her childhood was heavily shaped around maintaining her career.

Career Success Became a Source of Resentment

Panettiere later said she had little understanding of how much money she was earning as a young actress.

In a 2011 interview with the Wall Street Journal, she said she had “not the slightest clue” how much she had been paid and only became interested in her finances when she was older.

She also claimed that money generated through her work was used to help cover family expenses.

According to Panettiere, by the time she was 16, her earnings from films, television projects and advertising contracts were contributing to major household purchases, including an apartment.

She said the arrangement eventually made her feel less like a daughter and more like a provider.

‘I Just Want You to Be My Mom’

The actress said the professional relationship eventually became so uncomfortable that she decided to end it.

Panettiere recalled telling her mother at 19, while working on Heroes, that she no longer wanted Vogel to manage her career.

“I just want you to be my mom,” she recalled saying.

According to Panettiere, Vogel responded that her daughter owed her money before walking away.

The actress said the exchange was particularly painful because she had hoped ending their professional relationship would allow them to rebuild their bond as mother and daughter.

She later moved out of the family home at 18, describing the decision as necessary for her own survival.

Panettiere Wanted a Different Kind of Relationship

Despite their estrangement, Panettiere did not completely rule out reconciliation.

While promoting her memoir, she acknowledged that the pair were no longer in contact but said she remained open to the possibility that circumstances could eventually change.

“Unfortunately, we don’t have a relationship right now,” she said.

However, she added that she had not closed the door on reconciliation if an opportunity arose in the future.

That possibility apparently never materialized publicly before her death.

Vogel Rejected Her Daughter’s Account

Vogel has disputed the portrayal of their relationship and pushed back against the suggestion that she forced Panettiere into a career she did not want.

She also suggested that renewed attention surrounding their family problems was connected to the promotion of Panettiere’s memoir.

In her own account, Vogel characterized the estrangement as a decision she made after years of difficult circumstances.

She said the pair were entitled to choose their own paths and expressed hope that her daughter would eventually find peace.

A Family Already Hit by Tragedy

Panettiere’s death is also a devastating development for her parents because the family had already experienced the loss of another child.

Her younger brother, Jansen Panettiere, died in 2023 at the age of 28 after suffering a heart condition.

Panettiere had spoken publicly about her brother and about the complicated dynamics surrounding her relationship with her mother.

Her father, Alan “Skip” Panettiere, was the parent who publicly confirmed the actress’s death, according to the account provided.

Vogel, meanwhile, has yet to publicly comment on her daughter’s death or respond to requests for comment.

Circumstances Surrounding Panettiere’s Death

Panettiere, 36, was reportedly found unresponsive on Sunday afternoon at an apartment in Greenville, South Carolina.

The property was associated with Brian Hickerson, her on-and-off boyfriend, with whom she had previously had a turbulent relationship.

According to the account provided, an acquaintance contacted emergency services at 1:51 p.m., reporting that Panettiere was unresponsive.

Dispatch audio reportedly referred to cardiac arrest and raised the possibility of an overdose.

Narcan, a medication used to reverse opioid overdoses, was reportedly found inside the apartment.

Panettiere was pronounced dead less than 40 minutes after emergency services were called.

Authorities have reportedly said there was no indication of foul play, while the circumstances surrounding her death remain under investigation.

A Final Dispute Over Her Farewell

The reported disagreement over funeral arrangements now places Panettiere’s family history back at the center of attention.

Those close to the actress are reportedly concerned that disagreements surrounding her relationship with Vogel could overshadow the occasion.

The insider who spoke to Shuter stressed that the actress’s wishes should be considered above the unresolved grievances between relatives.

“Lesley is Hayden’s mother, but that doesn’t erase the history between them,” the source said.

For a family already marked by years of personal conflict and devastating loss, the question of who should make the final decisions surrounding Panettiere’s farewell has added another painful dimension to an already tragic story.
