The United Kingdom has reinforced its commitment to Lebanon’s security, sovereignty and long-term stability following a two-day visit by Deputy National Security Adviser Dame Barbara Woodward, who held talks with the country’s senior political and military leadership.
The visit, which took place on 1 and 2 July, focused on expanding cooperation between the two nations while supporting diplomatic efforts aimed at easing regional tensions.
Senior Lebanese Leaders Host UK Delegation
Accompanied by British Ambassador Hamish Cowell, Dame Barbara met several of Lebanon’s top officials, including Speaker Nabih Berri, Prime Minister Nawaf Salam, Deputy Prime Minister Tarek Mitri and Lebanese Armed Forces Commander General Rodolphe Haykal.
The discussions explored ways to strengthen Lebanon’s state institutions, extend government authority across the country and support political solutions aligned with United Nations Security Council Resolution 1701.
British officials also reaffirmed their support for Lebanon’s efforts to restore stability and reinforce national institutions during a challenging period.
Britain Welcomes New Regional Framework
A major focus of the meetings was the recently announced trilateral framework agreement involving Lebanon, Israel and the United States.
The UK described the agreement as a significant diplomatic step that could help advance several long-standing objectives, including the withdrawal of Israeli forces from Lebanese territory, the disarmament of Hezbollah and the full deployment of the Lebanese Armed Forces throughout the country.
British representatives said the framework provides an opportunity to move negotiations forward and reduce instability along the border.
London Offers Continued Diplomatic and Humanitarian Support
The UK signalled its readiness to assist the ongoing diplomatic process through humanitarian assistance, development programmes and continued political engagement.
British officials said they remain committed to working alongside Lebanese authorities and international partners to support efforts that promote peace, protect civilians and strengthen state institutions.
The visit underscored London’s intention to remain actively involved in helping Lebanon navigate its political and security challenges.
Lebanese Armed Forces Receive Strong UK Backing
Britain also highlighted its long-standing partnership with the Lebanese Armed Forces, describing them as the country’s legitimate national defence force.
UK support has included border security infrastructure, military training and equipment aimed at improving operational capabilities.
During the visit, Dame Barbara praised the Lebanese military for its role in securing the Syrian border, responding to security pressures in southern Lebanon and maintaining national stability despite ongoing regional tensions.
Woodward: Diplomacy Is the Only Sustainable Solution
Reflecting on the visit, Dame Barbara said Lebanon stands at an important turning point as it works with international partners toward a more peaceful and sovereign future.
She stressed that diplomatic engagement remains the most effective route to achieving a lasting political settlement, including the withdrawal of Israeli forces, Hezbollah’s disarmament and the full deployment of the Lebanese Armed Forces across Lebanese territory.
According to Woodward, Britain will continue supporting initiatives designed to create durable peace and improve security for both Lebanon and Israel.
Ambassador Reaffirms Britain’s Long-Term Commitment
British Ambassador Hamish Cowell also welcomed the newly announced trilateral agreement, describing it as an encouraging development for the region.
He reiterated that the UK remains committed to supporting Lebanon’s sovereignty and stability while working closely with both Lebanese authorities and international partners to advance peace efforts and safeguard civilian populations.
The visit concludes with Britain reaffirming its intention to remain a key diplomatic and security partner for Lebanon as regional negotiations continue.
