The Secretary-General of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), Muhammad Sanusi Barkindo, has passed away.
On Tuesday, he passed away at 11 p.m. His age was 63.
Mele Kyari, the group managing director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited, confirmed his passing.
His passing happened a few hours after President Muhammadu Buhari thanked him for his outstanding service.
Kyari tweeted: “We lost our esteemed Dr Muhammad Sanusi Barkindo. He died at about 11pm yesterday 5th July 2022.
“Certainly a great loss to his immediate family, the NNPC, our country Nigeria, the OPEC and the global energy community. Burial arrangements will be announced shortly.”, he said.
OPEC Secretary General Barkindo’s tenure was set to expire on July 31.
