Leaked Fauci Texts Reveal Private Warning Over Miscarriage Risks as Senator Demands Answers From Former COVID Chief

Dr. Anthony Fauci is facing renewed scrutiny after newly released text messages showed that he was privately informed about concerns surrounding COVID-19 vaccination during early pregnancy.

The messages, obtained from Fauci’s government-issued iPhone and released as part of a Republican Senate investigation, reveal an exchange with Dr. John Mascola, then director of the Vaccine Research Center.

Mascola told Fauci that initial pregnancy studies had avoided vaccination during the first trimester because of concerns involving fever and potentially higher miscarriage rates.

The message has become a central focus of questions from Senator Ron Johnson, who has been investigating the federal government’s handling of COVID-19 and its vaccine policies.

Fauci Read the Message But Did Not Respond

According to metadata released by Johnson’s office, Fauci opened Mascola’s message on the same evening it was sent, less than an hour after receiving it.

There is no evidence in the released material that Fauci responded to Mascola’s warning.

The lack of a recorded reply has added to questions about what Fauci knew at the time and how officials assessed the available evidence concerning pregnant women and COVID-19 vaccination.

However, the released texts do not establish that Fauci personally endorsed the concerns described by Mascola or that he concealed information about miscarriage risks.

Senator Johnson Demands Answers From Mascola

A major unanswered question is the identity of the “initial studies” Mascola referred to in his message.

Johnson’s office said it contacted Mascola seeking clarification about the research and the reason for his warning to Fauci.

Mascola has not provided answers, with Johnson’s office saying he retained legal counsel following the inquiry.

The senator has repeatedly accused federal health authorities of withholding information from the public and has called for greater transparency surrounding decisions made during the pandemic.

Other Messages Show Officials Debating Pregnancy Vaccination

The newly released correspondence is not the first evidence of senior health officials discussing potential concerns about vaccination during pregnancy.

In January 2021, Fauci exchanged messages with then-CDC Director Rochelle Walensky and Vivek Murthy, who later became US surgeon general, about reactions reported following second doses of COVID-19 vaccines.

Fauci noted that fever and cytokine reactions could theoretically be associated with miscarriage during the first trimester.

Around the same period, Murthy asked Fauci and Walensky about a World Health Organization advisory that advised against Moderna vaccination for pregnant women because of limited data.

Murthy expressed concern that the recommendation could generate questions and potentially undermine confidence among pregnant women.

Fauci Pointed to the Balance Between Risks and Benefits

Fauci’s response emphasized that vaccination decisions for pregnant women required weighing potential vaccine risks against the dangers posed by COVID-19 itself.

He also noted that animal toxicity studies had not identified warning signs.

The messages have since become a point of political dispute, particularly among Republican lawmakers who argue that private discussions among senior officials appeared more cautious than some of their public statements at the time.

Fauci said publicly in February 2021 that there were no red flags suggesting vaccinated pregnant women faced a concerning safety problem.

CDC Later Recommended Vaccination During Pregnancy

Federal guidance subsequently changed as more evidence became available.

By August 2021, the CDC was recommending COVID-19 vaccination for pregnant women, citing accumulating evidence that did not show an increased risk of miscarriage.

That evolution in guidance is now being examined alongside the private messages from early 2021, when researchers and health officials were working with comparatively limited data on vaccination during pregnancy.

Thousands of Fauci Messages Released

The latest disclosure follows an earlier release of communications from Fauci’s government phone.

Johnson and Senator Rand Paul released an initial collection of messages on August 10.

The material reportedly contained more than 34,000 text messages and 522 voicemails.

The communications have become part of a wider Republican examination of Fauci’s conduct and decision-making during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Fauci’s Wider Congressional Controversy

The latest controversy comes as Fauci continues to face intense political scrutiny over his role as one of America’s most prominent public health officials during the pandemic.

Republican lawmakers have questioned him over several issues, including the origins of COVID-19, federal research funding and the government’s pandemic response.

During a Senate appearance last month, Fauci invoked the Fifth Amendment 111 times while answering questions from senators.

Earlier this month, he was also found in contempt of Congress, creating the possibility that the dispute could be referred to the Department of Justice.

The newly disclosed pregnancy-related texts are therefore becoming another flashpoint in the continuing political battle over Fauci’s handling of the pandemic and the decisions made by federal health authorities during the vaccine rollout.
