On a quiet Wednesday evening in Nottingham, a devastating incident occurred when an eight-year-old boy fell from a third-floor window of his home on Costock Avenue.
The child, identified locally as May Hamid Balal, fell approximately 30 feet around 7:15 PM, leading to his tragic death at the hospital shortly afterward.
A Little Boy with Special Needs
May Hamid was described by neighbors as a boy with severe learning disabilities, including being non-verbal and autistic.
He attended a special school designed to meet his specific needs.
As the second youngest of four children, May had a history of escaping from his home, which raised concerns among those living nearby.
Neighbors’ Harrowing Experience
The neighborhood was shaken by the incident.
Residents were the first to notice something was wrong when they heard a loud crack.
They rushed outside to find May Hamid injured and immediately began administering CPR while waiting for paramedics.
Despite their efforts, the boy succumbed to his injuries at the hospital.
A History of Escapes
Neighbours revealed that May Hamid had previously managed to escape from his home on several occasions.
There were reports of him wandering into other people’s homes, with one neighbor recalling a time when she found him in her living room and had to return him to his house.
These repeated escapes, including one through a second-floor window, had previously been a concern.
Community Shock and Grief
Ibnu Habbas, one of the neighbors who tried to help, described the scene as shocking and distressing.
He recounted how he and others had rushed to assist May Hamid, with some being guided through CPR techniques by the ambulance service over the phone.
The community, which had known the family and occasionally interacted with them, is deeply affected by the loss.
Police Investigation and Call for Information
A police presence remained at the family’s home the following morning as authorities began their investigation.
Chief Inspector Jon Scurr of Nottinghamshire Police expressed the community’s grief and urged anyone with information or dashcam footage related to the incident to come forward.
The police are seeking to piece together details surrounding the tragic event and have requested that anyone with relevant information contact them at 101, quoting incident 671 of September 18, 2024.
