Comrades Marathon Association confirms 89.98km race route for 2025 Down Run between Pietermaritzburg and Durban

There’s something special about South Africa’s Comrades Marathon—it’s not just a race, it’s a legendary test of human endurance.

And in 2025, this ultra-distance run is getting a few exciting tweaks to elevate the experience for runners and supporters alike.

If you’ve been thinking about signing up, or just love the drama of this iconic event, here’s everything new and noteworthy.

2025 Race Will Stretch Nearly 90km—Here’s Why That Matters

This year’s edition of the Comrades, officially the 98th running of the race, will take runners on a challenging 89.98km journey.

That’s a bit longer than the last Down Run in 2023, which came in at just over 87.7km. The difference? A revamped finish line location that’s all about atmosphere and accessibility.

On Sunday, June 8, thousands of runners will take off from Pietermaritzburg City Hall and push their limits all the way to Durban, finishing just outside People’s Park on Masabalala Yengwa Avenue.

This new endpoint replaces the traditional Kingsmead Stadium and comes with perks: a grandstand, entertainment zones, and loads of space for running clubs to celebrate their stars.

A More Spectator-Friendly Finish for 2025

Forget the exhausting post-race climbs up steps or winding through crowded tunnels.

The new finish line is designed to let runners coast into the celebration.

After completing nearly 90km, athletes can expect a flat and easy walk to hospitality tents or nearby parking spots.

Plus, shuttle services will run throughout the day to help runners reconnect with friends, family—or just get to their well-earned snacks faster.

This route wasn’t just mapped out casually. The CMA’s Route Portfolio team worked closely with local traffic authorities to measure and lock in the exact distance.

Their goal? A seamless, celebratory end to what’s often described as The Ultimate Human Race.

Big Crowds, Bigger Plans: 22,000 Runners Expected

With around 22,000 runners expected at the starting line, safety and smooth logistics are top priorities.

That’s why, for the first time in a while, the CMA will split runners into two groups.

The first wave will start at 5:45 AM, followed by a second wave at 6:00 AM.

The goal here is simple: reduce congestion and make those early kilometres feel open and comfortable—just like they did in the good old days of the 1990s Comrades races.

Each wave will be clearly marked with color-coded race numbers (orange or purple), and corresponding finish-line chutes in Durban will ensure runners collect the right medals based on their batch.

Lighting Up the Last Stretch to Keep Everyone Safe

Let’s be honest—running 90km is no joke, and finishing in the dark is even tougher.

To make sure runners feel secure, especially in the final stretch, the CMA is stepping up its lighting game.

Expect a well-lit final 10km, with floodlights from Westwood all the way to the finish line at People’s Park.

This lighting will also cover nearby parking areas and key pedestrian routes to reduce risks after dark.

Security will also be tight. A dedicated response team will be on duty until late on race day, partnering with SAPS and event staff to ensure everyone—runners, spectators, and volunteers—is protected.

The Heart of the Comrades Remains the Same

Even with these changes, the core of the Comrades spirit remains.

This is a race built on history, challenge, and community.

As CMA General Manager Alain Dalais put it, this updated route still captures the heart of the race, while making it better for everyone involved.

From a more inclusive finish zone to enhanced runner safety and smoother logistics, the 2025 Down Run is shaping up to be something truly special.

So, are you thinking of running this year? Or will you be cheering from the sidelines? Either way, there’s no denying it—Comrades 2025 is going to be unforgettable.
