A man has appeared before a Crown Court in connection with allegations of rape and sexual assault following an incident reported on Brighton beach, in a case that has prompted a wider police response and ongoing public concern.

Bilal Alkadour, 35, is accused of attacking a woman in the early hours of the morning near one of Brighton’s most well-known landmarks.

Alleged Incident Near Seafront Landmark

The court heard that the alleged assault involved a 21-year-old woman who told police she was attacked opposite the Grand Hotel in Brighton around 2am on May 3.

The seaside location, usually busy during the day but quieter at night, became the focus of a major investigation after the report was made to authorities.

Police Investigation Leads to Arrest

Following the complaint, Sussex Police launched an inquiry that led to the arrest of Alkadour on May 14.

Officers carried out investigative work over several days before detaining him in connection with the allegations. He was later formally charged.

Charges and Court Proceedings

Alkadour, of Newark-on-Trent in Nottinghamshire, faces multiple charges including rape, two counts of sexual assault, and assault by penetration relating to a woman aged 16 or over.

He first appeared at Brighton Magistrates’ Court on May 16, where he was remanded in custody ahead of further hearings.

Crown Court Appearance and Plea

At a subsequent hearing at Hove Crown Court, Alkadour appeared wearing a black puffer jacket and grey trousers.

Speaking through an Arabic interpreter, he entered not guilty pleas to all four charges.

The judge set a trial date for November, meaning the case will proceed later in the year.

Court Reminder on Legal Process

Judge Jeremy Gold KC reminded the defendant of the importance of cooperating fully with his legal representatives as preparations for trial continue.

The judge emphasised standard procedural expectations as the case moves into its next phase before a jury.

Police Response and Public Reassurance

Chief Superintendent Adam Hays of Sussex Police said officers are continuing to support the victim while the case progresses through the courts.

He praised the complainant for coming forward and assisting investigators, describing it as an act of courage.

Police also confirmed increased patrols along the seafront, saying they are working with partner agencies to maintain public safety and support vulnerable people in the area.
