Argentina produced a stunning late turnaround to defeat Egypt 3-2 in the FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 16, overturning a two-goal deficit with three goals in the closing stages to book a place in the quarter-finals.

Enzo Fernández scored the decisive goal deep into stoppage time after Cristian Romero and Lionel Messi had erased Egypt’s advantage in a remarkable finish at Atlanta Stadium.

Egypt Pushes Defending Champions to the Brink

Egypt appeared destined for one of the biggest upsets of the tournament after taking control of the match with goals from Yasser Ibrahim and Mostafa Ziko.

Ibrahim opened the scoring in the 15th minute with a header before Egypt’s disciplined defensive display frustrated Argentina for much of the contest.

The Pharaohs thought they had doubled their lead shortly before the hour through Ziko, but the goal was ruled out following a foul during the build-up.

Their second goal eventually arrived in the 67th minute when Ziko completed a swift counterattack involving Mohamed Salah and Haissem Hassan.

Shoubir Delivers Outstanding Goalkeeping Display

Goalkeeper Mostafa Shoubir played a major role in keeping Egypt in front for much of the match.

The 26-year-old denied Lionel Messi from the penalty spot after Nicolás Tagliafico won a spot kick and later produced excellent saves to stop efforts from Alexis Mac Allister and Julián Álvarez.

His penalty save made him only the fourth goalkeeper in FIFA World Cup history to stop two penalties during a single tournament, having also denied Iran’s Mehdi Taremi earlier in the competition.

Argentina Sparks Incredible Late Revival

With elimination looming, Argentina launched a dramatic comeback during the final minutes.

Cristian Romero reduced the deficit in the 79th minute before Messi restored parity five minutes later with a clinical finish.

As extra time appeared inevitable, Enzo Fernández completed the turnaround in second-half stoppage time, firing home the winner to send Argentina into the last eight.

The goal also carried historical significance as it became the 3,000th goal scored in FIFA World Cup history.

Messi Earns Player of the Match Recognition

Messi’s influence during Argentina’s comeback earned him the Michelob Ultra Superior Player of the Match award.

Although he missed an earlier penalty, the captain responded by scoring the crucial equalizer and inspiring his side’s remarkable recovery when the pressure was at its highest.

Argentina will now face Switzerland in the quarter-finals after the Swiss eliminated Colombia in a penalty shootout.

Scaloni and Fernández Praise Team’s Resilience

Argentina head coach Lionel Scaloni admitted he was overcome with emotion after the final whistle, describing the victory as a testament to the character of his players.

Match-winner Enzo Fernández said the goal fulfilled a long-held personal ambition dating back to the previous World Cup while praising the squad’s determination to continue fighting regardless of the circumstances.

He credited his teammates, coaching staff and supporters for helping Argentina overcome adversity and advance another step toward defending its world title.

Egypt Exits After Courageous Performance

Despite the defeat, Egypt delivered one of its strongest performances of the tournament and came within minutes of eliminating one of football’s traditional powerhouses.

The North African side matched Argentina for long periods through disciplined defending, dangerous counterattacks and outstanding goalkeeping before the late surge ultimately ended its World Cup campaign.

Argentina, meanwhile, survives a major scare and continues its pursuit of another FIFA World Cup title with momentum restored after one of the tournament’s most dramatic comeback victories.
