Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has praised Germany’s leadership in strengthening Ukraine’s air defense capabilities, highlighting Berlin’s military support and its contributions to efforts aimed at improving protection against ballistic missile attacks.
The Ukrainian leader also confirmed that Kyiv and Berlin are preparing a new drone cooperation agreement while advancing discussions on a broader European anti-ballistic defense system.
Germany Recognized for Strengthening Ukraine’s Air Defense
Zelenskyy said Germany has played a leading role in reinforcing Ukraine’s air defense through both direct bilateral assistance and significant contributions to the PURL program.
According to the president, that support has enabled Ukraine to acquire anti-ballistic missiles that remain in limited global supply, providing critical capabilities as the country continues to defend against Russian missile attacks.
He described the assistance as especially important at a time when Russia continues to rely on ballistic missile strikes as part of its military campaign.
Kyiv and Berlin Preparing New Drone Partnership
In addition to air defense cooperation, Zelenskyy announced that Ukraine and Germany are working toward signing a new Drone Deal.
The proposed agreement is expected to expand collaboration in drone technology and defense production, further strengthening military cooperation between the two countries.
The initiative forms part of Ukraine’s broader effort to deepen defense-industrial partnerships with European allies while enhancing its domestic defense capabilities.
Joint European Missile Defense Under Discussion
Ukraine and Germany are also collaborating on plans to develop a joint European anti-ballistic defense system.
Zelenskyy said such a project would improve Europe‘s ability to defend against missile threats by strengthening regional cooperation on advanced air and missile defense technologies.
He argued that building shared defensive capabilities is essential for ensuring long-term security across the continent.
Zelenskyy Thanks Chancellor Friedrich Merz
The Ukrainian president expressed gratitude to Germany and Chancellor Friedrich Merz for their continued support and commitment to expanding European defense cooperation.
Zelenskyy said progress toward a common anti-ballistic defense framework represents an important step in improving the protection of civilians throughout Europe against future missile attacks.
He emphasized that coordinated European action remains the most effective way to strengthen regional security and safeguard lives amid ongoing threats.
