Capt. Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger, the retired pilot celebrated around the world for the dramatic emergency landing of US Airways Flight 1549 in New York’s Hudson River, has revealed that he has been diagnosed with early-stage Alzheimer’s disease.
The announcement marks a deeply personal moment for the man whose calm leadership once saved 155 lives.
Sully Opens Up About His Health
In a statement released Tuesday, the 75-year-old shared that he recently learned he is living with the early stages of Alzheimer’s disease.
While acknowledging the challenges ahead, Sullenberger said his symptoms remain mild for now.
He explained that the condition has occasionally made it harder to recall names, caused him to repeat stories without realizing it, and affected the quality of his sleep.
Despite these early changes, he stressed that he is only at the beginning of the journey and remains focused on the future.
Diagnosis Confirmed by Memory Specialist
Sullenberger disclosed that he received his diagnosis from Dr. Gil Rabinovici at the UCSF Memory and Aging Center in California.
After discussing the situation with his loved ones, he chose to make the diagnosis public.
According to the retired pilot, he hopes that speaking openly about Alzheimer’s will encourage other individuals and families facing the disease to seek support instead of struggling in silence.
A Lifetime Dedicated to Public Service
Reflecting on his career, Sullenberger highlighted decades spent serving the public in multiple roles.
Before becoming a household name, he served in the U.S. Air Force, flew commercial aircraft, investigated aviation accidents, and later represented the United States as Ambassador to the International Civil Aviation Organization.
Following the events of 2009, he became a leading advocate for improvements in aviation safety.
He worked alongside industry professionals to push for stronger pilot training standards, better rest requirements for flight crews, the preservation of the two-pilot cockpit rule, and the adoption of enhanced aviation technology.
Finding Purpose in a New Challenge
Although the diagnosis has introduced an unexpected chapter in his life, Sullenberger said it has also given him a renewed sense of purpose.
He believes that continuing to speak publicly about Alzheimer’s is another form of service.
By sharing his experience, he hopes to inspire others affected by the disease to come forward without fear or embarrassment, helping to reduce the stigma that often surrounds memory disorders.
The Legacy of the Miracle on the Hudson
Sullenberger’s name became synonymous with courage on Jan. 15, 2009, when US Airways Flight 1549 suffered a catastrophic bird strike shortly after taking off from New York’s LaGuardia Airport.
After a flock of Canada geese disabled both engines of the Airbus A320, he determined there was no safe airport within reach.
Instead, he executed a controlled emergency landing on the icy waters of the Hudson River.
The remarkable maneuver ensured that every one of the 155 passengers and crew members survived.
Rescue teams quickly evacuated everyone from the aircraft, and the incident became known worldwide as the “Miracle on the Hudson.”
Honors That Followed His Heroic Actions
Sullenberger’s extraordinary response earned widespread recognition across the United States.
Then-New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg presented him with the city’s prestigious Key to the City in honor of his actions.
Years later, his remarkable story reached movie audiences through the 2016 film Sully, in which Academy Award-winning actor Tom Hanks portrayed the veteran pilot and brought the dramatic rescue to the big screen.
Looking Ahead With Optimism
Despite facing a progressive illness, Sullenberger remains hopeful about the future.
He said that while Alzheimer’s may eventually affect some of his memories, it will not define who he is or diminish his appreciation for life.
He expressed confidence that he will face the road ahead with the unwavering support of his family, adding that the lessons of hope and resilience learned during the Miracle on the Hudson continue to guide him through this new chapter.
