Chilling CCTV Footage Sparks New Questions After Ann Widdecombe Murder Suspect Is Seen Carrying Mysterious Object

New details have emerged in the investigation into the killing of former Conservative MP Ann Widdecombe, with CCTV footage reportedly showing the main murder suspect leaving his South Yorkshire home carrying what appears to be a long object concealed in his clothing before making a lengthy journey to Devon.

The 28-year-old man, whose identity has not been made public, was arrested on suspicion of murder after armed police carried out a dramatic operation at his council home in Rotherham on Saturday night.

Detectives continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the death of the 78-year-old politician.

CCTV Captures Suspect Before Cross-Country Journey

According to investigators, security footage recorded the suspect leaving his terraced home shortly before 8am on Wednesday, the same day Ms Widdecombe is believed to have been fatally attacked.

The footage allegedly shows a long object, believed to resemble a baton, wooden stick or metal pole measuring more than a foot in length, protruding from the pocket of his shorts.

Witnesses familiar with the recording claimed the object appeared concealed beneath his shirt before he placed it inside his red hatchback.

Neighbours who viewed the footage said the man appeared calm as he entered the vehicle and drove away.

Police believe he then travelled approximately 267 miles from South Yorkshire to Ms Widdecombe’s isolated bungalow near Haytor on Dartmoor, a journey estimated to take around five hours.

Detectives Believe Attack Happened Around Midday

Investigators have pieced together a timeline suggesting Ms Widdecombe remained active throughout Wednesday morning.

She appeared live via video link on TalkTV before exchanging WhatsApp messages with a Channel 5 News researcher ahead of a planned television interview.

At 12.19pm, she sent what is believed to be her final text message, writing, “Received! Panic over!”

Police believe the fatal attack occurred at approximately 12.30pm.

Less than 20 minutes later, the researcher sent another message that was never opened, while repeated phone calls also went unanswered.

Ms Widdecombe failed to join a scheduled Zoom interview later that afternoon, prompting growing concern among colleagues.

Her body was discovered at her Devon home the following morning after friends raised the alarm when they were unable to contact her.

Police Rule Out Political or Terrorism Motive

Despite Ms Widdecombe’s long and high-profile political career, detectives have stressed there is currently no evidence to suggest the killing was linked to terrorism or political motives.

Assistant Chief Constable Matt Longman said investigators remain open-minded about establishing the motive but emphasized there is nothing to indicate the wider public faces any ongoing threat.

He also urged the public to avoid spreading online speculation, warning that misinformation could hamper the investigation while causing additional distress to the former MP’s family and friends.

Armed Officers Arrest Suspect at South Yorkshire Home

The suspect was arrested after around a dozen armed officers surrounded his home in Kimberworth Park on Saturday evening.

Residents described seeing police quietly approach the property before knocking on the front door.

The suspect reportedly opened it voluntarily and was taken into custody without resistance.

Police also removed his pet labradoodle from the address, while forensic officers have continued examining the property and surrounding area for evidence.

Neighbours Describe a Quiet and Reclusive Lifestyle

People living nearby described the suspect as someone who rarely interacted with others and had become increasingly withdrawn following the death of his father late last year.

Neighbours said he lived alone after his brothers moved away and seldom left the house.

Several recalled that his ageing red Vauxhall Corsa was often parked outside for weeks at a time, gathering rust and becoming surrounded by weeds.

Residents said they were surprised to see him driving away early on Wednesday morning because the vehicle was rarely used.

Others remembered him as polite but increasingly isolated, saying his behaviour noticeably changed after his father’s passing.

Senior Officers Praise Rapid Investigation

Devon and Cornwall Police say the inquiry has progressed at exceptional speed since Ms Widdecombe’s death.

Chief Constable James Vaughan described the investigation as an extraordinary operation launched in response to the killing of one of Britain’s best-known political figures.

He said officers worked around the clock to identify and locate a suspect within just 48 hours, adding that further investigative work continues while the suspect remains in custody.

Political Community Reviews Security Measures

Ms Widdecombe’s death has renewed concerns over the safety of elected representatives.

Reform UK has begun reviewing correspondence sent to the former politician in the weeks leading up to her death to determine whether any threatening communications were received.

The party has also announced plans to strengthen security arrangements for its MPs, including enhanced protection measures, as concerns continue to grow over the increasing number of threats and crimes directed at politicians across the UK.

Meanwhile, a police cordon remains in place around Ms Widdecombe’s home in Haytor, where floral tributes continue to be left in memory of the veteran politician as detectives work to establish exactly what happened.
