Alejandro Garnacho’s first steps as an Aston Villa player have taken an unexpected turn after the winger was forced off with an injury during only his second appearance for the club.
The Argentine, who recently joined Villa on a season-long loan from Chelsea, was unable to complete the opening half of Villa’s pre-season clash against Thai side BG Pathum.
The injury interrupted what had been an important opportunity for Garnacho to continue settling into Unai Emery’s squad after making his unofficial debut against the Indonesia All Stars just days earlier.
Heavy Challenge Leads to Early Exit
Garnacho’s afternoon came to an abrupt end following a challenge from BG Pathum defender Ryan Edwards.
The 22-year-old remained on the ground as Villa’s medical team rushed onto the pitch to assess the damage before providing treatment.
After several minutes of attention, Garnacho was unable to continue and was substituted before halftime.
Initial reports suggest the winger sustained a facial injury, though the full extent of the problem has yet to be confirmed by the club.
The setback will be a concern for both player and manager as Villa continue preparations for the new campaign.
Villa Secure Victory Despite Injury Concerns
Although Garnacho’s departure cast a shadow over the match, Aston Villa still claimed a comfortable 3-1 victory in Thailand.
Goals from Emi Buendia, Victor Lindelof and Boubacar Kamara ensured Unai Emery’s side maintained their winning momentum during the club’s overseas tour.
However, Garnacho was not the only player to leave the contest early.
Club captain John McGinn also picked up an injury after suffering a knock to his knee, creating another fitness issue for Villa ahead of the competitive season.
Loan Move Offers Chance to Revive Career
Garnacho arrived at Villa Park this summer on a year-long loan from Chelsea in a deal that insiders say satisfies the London club’s original valuation of around £43 million through a package of achievable conditions.
The move represents another fresh opportunity for the Argentine international, who has experienced a turbulent spell over the past two seasons.
Villa had previously shown interest in signing Garnacho before his departure from Manchester United, and Emery remained determined to bring him to Birmingham after the winger became available again.
Mixed Season at Chelsea
Last season, Garnacho featured in 43 matches across all competitions for Chelsea, contributing eight goals during the campaign.
His Premier League return included one goal and three assists from 24 appearances, while four of his overall goals came during the club’s Carabao Cup run.
Despite seeing regular action, he was unable to establish himself as an automatic starter and ultimately missed out on selection for the World Cup squad.
Emery Places Faith in the Argentine
Villa manager Unai Emery is believed to have been instrumental in securing Garnacho’s arrival, viewing the versatile attacker as a player capable of rediscovering his best form in a new environment.
The Spaniard reportedly pushed hard for the deal, convinced that Garnacho’s pace, creativity and attacking flair can strengthen Villa’s options throughout a demanding campaign.
With regular playing time expected to be more attainable, Garnacho will hope this latest injury proves only a minor interruption rather than a significant obstacle.
Challenging Fixtures Await Aston Villa
Villa’s pre-season schedule remains packed, with upcoming friendlies against Borussia Monchengladbach and Bayern Munich still to come before the Premier League season begins away at Brighton.
The Europa League winners will also have the opportunity to compete for another trophy when they face Champions League holders Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Super Cup, giving Emery’s squad an immediate chance to test themselves against Europe’s elite before the domestic campaign gathers pace.
