Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer has admitted he was caught off guard by Eddie Howe’s decision to leave the club just weeks before the start of the new Premier League season, describing the timing as particularly surprising.
Speaking about the managerial change, Shearer suggested he believes the decision originated from Howe rather than the club.
He questioned why any separation had not taken place immediately after the previous campaign if a departure had already been on the horizon, as that would have allowed Newcastle more time to prepare for the transition.
Questions Raised Over Newcastle’s Direction
While acknowledging that the circumstances surrounding Howe’s departure remain unclear, Shearer hinted that growing uncertainty behind the scenes may have contributed to the manager’s decision.
He pointed to Newcastle’s recent transfer activity, expressing concern that the club appears to be losing many of its key players.
With high-profile departures involving Alexander Isak, Sandro Tonali and Anthony Gordon, Shearer warned that supporters could soon see captain Bruno Guimarães follow the same path.

Shearer reflected on the dramatic turnaround, highlighting Howe’s role in rebuilding the squad, restoring belief and guiding Newcastle into European competition.
Among the achievements he praised most was Newcastle’s memorable League Cup triumph over Liverpool, describing the Wembley victory as one of the greatest moments he has experienced as a supporter.
He also recalled the unforgettable Champions League nights that Howe delivered during his tenure.
Jaissle Faces Enormous Expectations
Reports continue to link Matthias Jaissle, currently in charge of Al Ahli, with the vacant managerial position.
The 38-year-old has built an impressive reputation in Saudi Arabia after guiding Al Ahli to consecutive AFC Champions League titles.
However, Shearer believes succeeding Howe at Newcastle would represent a completely different challenge.
He stressed that managing in the Premier League brings unique demands and suggested that stepping into a role following such a successful predecessor will place enormous pressure on any incoming coach.
Shearer believes Jaissle would immediately face difficult circumstances both on and off the pitch.

Looking ahead to the new campaign, Shearer insisted Newcastle must focus on restoring stability rather than continuing to overhaul the squad.
