A large passenger ferry carrying around 100 people collided head-on with a cargo ship in the port of Souda on the Greek island of Crete, with dramatic footage capturing the moment the two vessels struck each other.

The video, recorded on Tuesday, showed the ships slowly closing the distance before the impact.

As the vessels approached, at least one sounded its horn repeatedly in an apparent attempt to warn of the imminent collision.

Impact Leaves Visible Damage to Both Vessels

The collision produced a loud crashing sound as the bow of the passenger ferry slammed into the port side of the cargo vessel, leaving visible structural damage.

Moments after the impact, the cargo ship could be seen drifting backward in the water while emergency sirens echoed across the port, signaling the response from local authorities.

Ferry Was Carrying Passengers and Dozens of Vehicles

According to local media, the passenger ferry involved in the accident was the Elyros, a vessel measuring approximately 600 feet in length.

At the time of the collision, it was transporting about 100 passengers along with 32 cars and 74 trucks.

The cargo ship, identified as Iosif K., was reportedly carrying 84 trucks when the accident occurred.

Despite the force of the impact, officials confirmed that no passengers or crew members on either vessel suffered injuries.

Authorities Detain Both Ships Pending Safety Inspections

Following the collision, both ships were ordered to remain docked in Souda Port while investigators examine the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Marine authorities have prohibited either vessel from departing until detailed inspections are completed and seaworthiness certificates are issued.

Investigators will assess the extent of the damage and determine what caused the ships to collide inside the busy harbor.

Separate Tragedy Off Crete Involved British Cruise Passenger

The maritime accident comes only days after another incident in waters near Crete involving a British tourist aboard a cruise ship.

The 79-year-old man was discovered unconscious on the vessel’s deck while the cruise was sailing near the island.

Crew members immediately administered first aid before he was transported to a local hospital after the ship diverted to Crete.

He was later pronounced dead.

The Chania Port Authority has opened a preliminary investigation into the death and has ordered an autopsy to establish the exact cause.

Officials have not disclosed whether the British passenger had been travelling alone or accompanied by relatives or friends.
