Manchester United have strengthened their midfield with the signing of Brazilian international Andrey Santos from Chelsea in a deal worth £50 million.
The 22-year-old arrives at Old Trafford as the club’s most expensive acquisition of the current transfer window and becomes United’s third senior signing this week, following the arrivals of goalkeeper Karl Darlow and midfielder Youri Tielemans.
Transfer Marks New Chapter After Mixed Chelsea Spell
Santos leaves Chelsea after an eventful period that included several loan moves before establishing himself in European football.
The midfielder joined the London club from Brazilian side Vasco da Gama in January 2023 in a transfer reportedly valued at £18 million. He immediately returned to Vasco on loan to continue his development before making the move to England later that year.
Early Premier League Experience Proved Difficult
Santos’ first taste of English football came during a loan spell at Nottingham Forest, where opportunities were limited.
He made only two first-team appearances during his time at the City Ground, with then-manager Steve Cooper pointing to the challenges faced by a young player trying to break into an established Premier League midfield while on loan.
The experience, although brief, became an important stage in the midfielder’s development.
Strasbourg Loan Revives Career
A return to Chelsea in January 2024 was quickly followed by another temporary move, this time to French club Strasbourg.
The switch proved transformative. After settling into Ligue 1, Santos became one of Strasbourg’s standout performers during the 2024–25 campaign, scoring 10 goals in 32 league matches and even captaining the side on several occasions.
His impressive displays convinced Chelsea to include him in their plans for the following season.
Competition Limits Opportunities at Stamford Bridge
Despite returning to Chelsea for the 2025–26 campaign, Santos struggled to establish himself as a regular starter.
He was frequently deployed in a deeper midfield position rather than in the more advanced role that best suits his attacking strengths. With Moisés Caicedo and Enzo Fernández firmly established in Chelsea’s midfield, Santos found playing time difficult to secure.
He finished the Premier League season with 27 appearances but completed the full 90 minutes on only four occasions. His only league goal came in Chelsea’s victory over Tottenham Hotspur.
Desire for Regular Football Influenced Move
Reports suggest Santos sought a club where he could play consistently at the highest level.
Chelsea’s limited fixture schedule, following the absence of European competition, was expected to reduce opportunities for squad players even further, making a transfer increasingly attractive for both player and club.
Manchester United moved quickly to secure the midfielder, offering him the prospect of a more prominent role.
£50 Million Valuation Divides Opinion
The transfer fee has generated mixed reactions among supporters and football observers.
Some believe the £50 million price tag represents a significant investment for a player who has yet to become an established Premier League regular.
Others argue that recent transfer market inflation makes the valuation more understandable, particularly for a young midfielder with proven potential and several years ahead of him.
There is also a view that Chelsea could eventually regret allowing Santos to join one of their Premier League rivals if he develops into one of England’s leading midfielders.
