A Brooklyn man has been arrested and charged with federal arson after investigators accused him of deliberately setting a school bus on fire in Times Square during the massive celebrations that followed the New York Knicks’ NBA championship victory.
Authorities say the incident endangered crowds of fans, emergency personnel and nearby property on one of the city’s busiest nights of the year.
Federal Investigation Leads to Arrest
Jonathan Strahs, 30, was taken into custody on Monday following a joint investigation involving the FDNY, the NYPD and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF).
Prosecutors allege he intentionally ignited a school bus in the early hours of June 14 while thousands of people filled Manhattan streets to celebrate the Knicks’ title and attend World Cup-related events.
The suspect now faces one count of federal arson in connection with the incident.
Surveillance Footage Tracked the Suspect’s Movements
According to investigators, the school bus had been temporarily stopped on West 42nd Street between Eighth and Ninth Avenues because of heavy pedestrian traffic.
The vehicle had been contracted to transport World Cup visitors between the Port Authority Bus Terminal and MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.
Authorities say surveillance footage showed Strahs boarding the stationary bus before leaving a short time later. Soon afterward, flames were detected inside the vehicle, prompting an emergency response.
Fire Spread Beyond the Original Vehicle
Officials said the blaze rapidly engulfed both the interior and exterior of the school bus before spreading to a second vehicle nearby.
Firefighters eventually brought the flames under control, preventing additional damage in the crowded district.
Following an examination of the scene, FDNY Fire Marshals concluded that the fire had been deliberately set.
Investigators then combined surveillance evidence with other forensic findings to identify and locate the suspect.
Fire Commissioner Praises Multi-Agency Effort
FDNY Fire Commissioner Lillian Bonsignore described the incident as a serious threat to public safety, noting that the fire occurred in the middle of packed championship celebrations.
She said the arrest removed what she described as a dangerous individual from New York City’s streets and credited the close cooperation between the FDNY, NYPD and ATF for successfully solving the case.
Bonsignore also praised Fire Marshals for conducting a detailed investigation that led authorities to the suspect.
Championship Celebrations Turned Disorderly
The school bus fire became one of several major incidents that unfolded as jubilant Knicks supporters celebrated across New York City after the franchise secured its first NBA championship in more than five decades.
Near Madison Square Garden, police officers struggled to control swelling crowds. One confrontation escalated after an officer repeatedly ordered a fan to move back onto the sidewalk.
When the individual continued advancing, officers forced him to the ground before arresting him as other spectators attempted to intervene.
Elsewhere, bottles were reportedly thrown at police officers as authorities worked to restore order.
Property Damage Reported Across the City
Celebrations also resulted in widespread vandalism and dangerous behavior throughout several boroughs.
Crowds climbed onto school buses, city buses, subway entrances, train station structures and lampposts to gain better views of the festivities.
A police vehicle near Madison Square Garden reportedly suffered extensive damage after fans climbed onto its roof, shattering the windshield.
In Times Square, damaged school buses remained scattered across the area until tow trucks removed the burned vehicles overnight.
Videos circulating online also showed one distraught bus driver pleading with fans to stop tearing apart his vehicle, warning that the destruction would ultimately affect his own paycheck.
Historic Knicks Triumph Sparked Massive Celebrations
The unprecedented celebrations followed New York’s dramatic 94-90 victory over the San Antonio Spurs in Game 5 of the NBA Finals, sealing a 4-1 series triumph and ending a championship drought that had lasted 53 years.
Led by captain Jalen Brunson, who delivered a record-setting 45-point performance in the decisive game, the Knicks completed another comeback victory after overcoming a 16-point deficit.
Brunson broke the franchise’s previous Finals scoring record and became the emotional centerpiece of New York’s long-awaited championship celebration.
Mikal Bridges and Josh Hart also played key supporting roles, while San Antonio received strong performances from Dylan Harper and Victor Wembanyama.
Despite the historic achievement, the celebrations that followed were overshadowed by scenes of disorder, multiple arrests and significant property damage across New York City.
Investigation Continues
While the federal arson case against Strahs moves through the courts, authorities continue reviewing additional incidents connected to the championship celebrations.
Law enforcement officials have indicated they will pursue those responsible for acts of violence, vandalism and property destruction that occurred during the citywide festivities.
