Darline Graham said she felt as though she was “living a nightmare” when she received the unexpected news that her brother, longtime South Carolina Senator Lindsey Graham, had died.
Speaking in an interview with Sean Hannity, Darline described the emotional moment she was informed of her brother’s passing, saying the shock and grief were overwhelming.
“It was just unbelievable. It was like I was living a nightmare when I got the unexpected news,” she said, explaining that she was devastated when she received the call.
Lindsey Graham died after suffering a tear in his aorta, ending the political career of one of South Carolina’s most recognizable Republican figures.
Calls from Republican leaders pushed Darline toward politics
Darline, 62, said she initially never imagined herself entering politics.
She described government service as her brother’s passion and said a Senate career was something she had never wanted for herself.
However, shortly after Lindsey Graham’s death, she began receiving messages from prominent Republican leaders encouraging her to take over his Senate seat.
Among those who reached out were President Donald Trump, South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster, and Senator Tim Scott.
Darline said the speed at which events unfolded surprised her, with political figures expressing their respect for Lindsey and asking whether she would consider serving.
After praying and speaking with her family, she said she decided she had a responsibility to continue her brother’s work.
“When they asked, it did not take me long. I prayed, I talked to my family. I knew that I had to step up. I had to carry on his legacy,” she said.

Darline was appointed to fill the remainder of Lindsey Graham’s Senate term after his death, but she confirmed that she will now seek a full term in the November election.
Trump has publicly supported her campaign, giving her his “Complete and Total Endorsement” and urging her to enter the race.
“RUN, DARLINE, RUN!” Trump wrote in a statement backing her candidacy.
Her appointment and decision to run have placed her at the center of a competitive Republican primary, where several other candidates are already positioning themselves for the seat.

Although Darline said she plans to continue several of Lindsey Graham’s priorities, particularly on foreign policy and national security, she also emphasized that her approach will include a stronger focus on domestic concerns.
She said she has spoken with Trump about maintaining her brother’s positions on issues such as sanctions against Russia but wants to address challenges affecting ordinary Americans.
Darline highlighted concerns including grocery prices, fuel costs, healthcare expenses, and insurance as issues she believes deserve more attention.
“I understand that protecting our borders and national security are important, but I started to talk about also what matters to the average person,” she said.
She added that she wants to represent the concerns of South Carolina residents who are dealing with rising costs and economic pressures.
Darline reflects on Lindsey’s final years of public service
Darline also spoke about her brother’s extensive travel around the world, particularly his frequent trips to the Middle East and Ukraine.
She admitted that his international work often worried her and that she would encourage him to slow down and take better care of himself.
Despite those concerns, she said she found comfort knowing Lindsey was dedicated to work he loved and believed in.
“I knew that he was doing what he loved, what he is passionate about,” she said, adding that he cared deeply about serving South Carolina and the United States.
Darline said she wished she could go back and encourage him to do things differently, but she believed nothing would have changed his commitment to public service.
Former senator’s staff prepares to continue under Darline’s leadership
Darline said Lindsey Graham’s longtime Senate staff will remain with her as she transitions into the role and prepares for the election campaign.
She acknowledged the challenge ahead but said she believes she has the determination and work ethic needed to succeed.
“I know I’m a hard worker. I learned that from Lindsey,” she said.
While she admitted the position comes with enormous pressure, Darline said she feels a sense of peace about accepting the responsibility.
Republican primary race begins as contenders compete for seat
Darline Graham will face a crowded Republican field as candidates compete for the nomination.
Representative Ralph Norman, businessman Patrick Hermann, businessman Mark Lynch, and attorney Duke Buckner are among those who have entered the contest.
Other potential candidates, including South Carolina Lieutenant Governor Pamela Evette and Trump ally Russell Fry, have also been linked to the race.
Representative Nancy Mace announced she would not seek the seat.
The Republican primary filing period is set to open Tuesday, with the special primary election scheduled for August 11.
Senate Majority Leader John Thune described Darline as a strong candidate who carries on Lindsey’s legacy but stopped short of endorsing her.
“The voters in South Carolina will decide it,” Thune said.
Darline says faith and family guided her unexpected political journey
Darline said she views her entry into politics as something shaped by circumstances beyond her control.
She explained that she never planned to pursue elected office but believes she must accept the opportunity placed before her.
“I just know that I have to trust that God has a plan,” she said.
Darline added that Lindsey had always supported her throughout life, and she now feels called to support his legacy.
“Lindsey was always there for me and now I feel like I have to step up and be there for him,” she said.

Darline Graham will now begin campaigning for the Republican nomination as she attempts to secure a full Senate term.
The upcoming special Republican primary will determine whether she can maintain her brother’s political legacy or whether another Republican contender will take control of the seat.
With Trump’s endorsement providing a major boost, Darline enters the race as a prominent candidate, but she will still face competition from experienced politicians and rising Republican figures.
The eventual Republican nominee will face Democratic candidate Annie Andrews, a pediatrician selected earlier this year, in the general election.
South Carolina remains a heavily Republican state, having not elected a Democrat to the U.S. Senate since Ernest Hollings left office in 2005.
