US Soccer Makes Shock Move! Mauricio Pochettino Offered Deal Through 2030 Before World Cup Even Ends

Mauricio Pochettino could remain at the helm of the United States men’s national team well beyond the current World Cup, with reports indicating that U.S. Soccer has already offered the Argentine coach a contract extension through the 2030 FIFA World Cup.

According to The Athletic, the proposed deal would keep the former Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea manager in charge until the next global tournament, which will be jointly hosted by Spain, Portugal and Morocco.

Strong World Cup Campaign Strengthens His Position

The reported offer comes after an encouraging World Cup campaign in which the United States topped Group D and secured qualification for the knockout rounds.

The Americans opened the tournament with convincing victories over Paraguay and Australia, performances that fueled optimism among supporters about the team’s ability to compete against elite international opposition.

Although the U.S. suffered a narrow 3-2 defeat to Turkey in its final group-stage match on Thursday, the result did not prevent the team from finishing first in the group.

The Americans are now preparing for a Round of 32 clash against Bosnia and Herzegovina on July 1 in San Francisco.

Contract Decision Expected After Tournament

Pochettino’s current agreement with U.S. Soccer is due to expire after the World Cup, and a final decision regarding his future is expected once the tournament concludes.

However, discussions between federation officials and the coach reportedly began several months ago, with the extension proposal being presented before the competition even kicked off.

The federation is believed to be eager to maintain continuity after seeing encouraging progress under his leadership.

European Clubs Could Still Enter the Race

Despite the reported extension offer, Pochettino is expected to remain a sought-after figure in European football.

The Argentine has frequently been linked with managerial openings at some of the continent’s biggest clubs, and reports before the World Cup suggested he had held discussions with Italian powerhouse AC Milan before the club ultimately appointed former Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim.

His reputation in club football means interest from Europe is likely to continue once his international commitments end.

Busy Calendar Could Await

If Pochettino agrees to stay, he would oversee several major competitions before the 2030 World Cup.

His tenure could include leading the United States at the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, as well as the next Copa América, which is expected to be hosted in the United States.

Those tournaments would provide valuable opportunities to further develop the national team before another World Cup campaign.

Coach Defends Team After Turkey Defeat

Following the loss to Turkey, Pochettino dismissed criticism focused solely on the result, arguing that the bigger achievement was winning the group and successfully advancing to the knockout stage.

He expressed disappointment that attention had shifted away from the team’s overall accomplishment, stressing that the squad had managed the pressure and expectations throughout the group phase while balancing player management and competitive priorities.

Pochettino also emphasized that true success should be measured by challenging for the World Cup itself rather than placing excessive importance on a single group-stage defeat.

He maintained that the team’s focus remains firmly on making history by pursuing the tournament’s ultimate prize.
