Côte d’Ivoire secured a historic place in the FIFA World Cup knockout rounds after defeating Curaçao 2-0 in their final Group E match at Philadelphia Stadium.

Forward Nicolas Pepe produced an outstanding display, scoring both goals to guide the Elephants into the last 32 for the first time in the nation’s World Cup history.

The victory ensured Côte d’Ivoire finished second in Group E with six points, earning a place in the knockout stage where they will face the runners-up from Group I in Dallas on June 30.

Fast Start Gives Côte d’Ivoire Complete Control

The African side wasted little time asserting themselves. After making four changes to the starting lineup following their narrow defeat to Germany, head coach Emerse Fae saw one of his selections immediately make an impact.

Just seven minutes into the match, Yan Diomande won possession near the Curaçao penalty area before delivering a precise low cross into the box.

Pepe arrived perfectly to tap the ball home from close range, giving Côte d’Ivoire an early advantage and recording the fastest World Cup goal ever scored by the country.

The early breakthrough allowed the Elephants to dictate possession and manage the tempo throughout much of the contest.

Curaçao Shows Determination Despite Elimination

Making its FIFA World Cup debut, Curaçao searched for an equalizer but struggled to create consistent opportunities against an organized Ivorian defense.

Tahith Chong came closest before halftime when his powerful strike narrowly sailed over the crossbar.

Captain Leandro Bacuna also threatened after weaving past defenders near the edge of the penalty area, but his effort drifted wide of the target.

Despite the defeat, Curaçao’s maiden World Cup campaign provided valuable experience for the Blue Wave as they concluded the tournament with one point from three matches.

Second Goal Seals Comfortable Victory

Côte d’Ivoire removed any remaining doubt midway through the second half when Pepe completed his brace.

A quick exchange of passes with midfielder Ibrahim Sangare left the forward with space inside the penalty area, where he calmly slotted a left-footed finish beyond goalkeeper Eloy Room to double his side’s advantage.

The Elephants comfortably saw out the remainder of the match to confirm qualification without facing any serious late pressure.

Historic Milestone for the Elephants

The victory marks a significant achievement for Côte d’Ivoire, whose previous World Cup appearances ended during the group stage.

Pepe’s opening strike also entered the record books as the fastest goal ever scored by the nation at the FIFA World Cup, highlighting an impressive individual performance that helped propel his country into uncharted territory.

The Elephants now turn their attention to the knockout rounds, where they hope to continue their impressive tournament run.

Players and Coach Celebrate Historic Achievement

Following the match, Pepe credited his teammates for both goals, praising Yan Diomande for creating the opener and Ibrahim Sangare for providing the assist that led to his second goal.

The forward described qualification as a moment of pride for the people of Côte d’Ivoire and expressed confidence that the squad has the quality to continue progressing in the tournament.

Head coach Emerse Fae echoed those sentiments, saying the team had believed they could reach the knockout stage despite knowing the challenge would be difficult.

While celebrating the milestone, he emphasized that the squad is already focused on preparing for its next match as it seeks to extend its World Cup journey.
