Ecuador produced one of the biggest upsets of the FIFA World Cup group stage by overturning an early deficit to defeat Germany 2-1 and book a place in the Round of 32.
The South American side entered its final Group E fixture needing a positive result after managing just one point from its opening two matches.
Despite facing an already-qualified German team, Ecuador showed resilience and determination to earn a memorable victory at New York/New Jersey Stadium.
Germany Strikes First With Record Early Goal
Germany wasted little time asserting itself as Leroy Sané found the net in just the second minute of play.
After receiving a clever pass from Florian Wirtz, Sané calmly fired a low finish beyond goalkeeper Hernán Galíndez to register Germany’s earliest World Cup goal since 1934 and his first goal at a major international tournament.
The early breakthrough appeared to put Germany firmly in control, but Ecuador quickly regrouped.
Nilson Angulo Sparks Ecuador’s Fightback
Ecuador found its response just minutes later through midfielder Nilson Angulo, who was making his first start of the tournament.
Following strong work by Pablo Vite to recover possession in Germany’s half, Angulo collected the pass outside the penalty area before driving a powerful shot through traffic and beyond veteran goalkeeper Manuel Neuer.
The equalizer marked Ecuador’s first goal of the 2026 FIFA World Cup and completely changed the momentum of the contest.
VAR Drama Before Plata Delivers Decisive Winner
Germany believed it had earned a penalty early in the second half, but referee Tori Penso overturned the decision after a Video Assistant Referee review determined Leroy Sané had committed a foul earlier in the move.
The decisive moment eventually arrived in the 77th minute.
After substitute Kevin Rodríguez flicked on a corner at the near post, Gonzalo Plata reacted quickest inside the six-yard box, stretching ahead of Neuer to guide the ball into the roof of the net and complete Ecuador’s remarkable comeback.
The late strike proved to be the winning goal and guaranteed Ecuador’s place among the tournament’s best third-placed teams.
Germany Advances Despite Defeat
Although Germany suffered its first defeat of the tournament, the team still finished at the top of Group E thanks to a superior goal difference over Côte d’Ivoire, with both nations ending the group stage on six points.
Ecuador finished third with four points, which was enough to secure progression under the expanded World Cup format, while Curaçao exited the competition with one point.
Historic Achievement for Ecuador
The qualification represents Ecuador’s first appearance in the World Cup knockout stage since reaching the Round of 16 at the 2006 tournament in Germany.
Midfielder Nilson Angulo was recognized as the Michelob Ultra Superior Player of the Match for his influential performance, while Gonzalo Plata’s winning goal will be remembered as one of Ecuador’s most important moments on the World Cup stage.
Players Celebrate While Germany Reflects on Defeat
Following the victory, Ecuador head coach Sebastián Beccacece dedicated the achievement to the country’s supporters, saying the qualification belonged to the people and that they deserved to celebrate the milestone.
Goalscorer Gonzalo Plata praised the belief within the squad and thanked Ecuador’s fans for creating a home-like atmosphere throughout the tournament, adding that the team now enters the knockout rounds with even greater confidence.
Germany captain Joshua Kimmich admitted his side lost control after a bright start, saying they repeatedly surrendered possession and allowed Ecuador to grow into the game.
Forward Denis Undav also acknowledged that Ecuador played with greater intensity and deserved the victory, adding that Germany must learn from the defeat before the knockout stage begins.
