The UK government has announced the appointment of Alastair King-Smith as the next His Majesty’s Ambassador to the Czech Republic, with the experienced diplomat set to assume the role in January 2027.
Alastair King-Smith to Replace Matthew Field
The appointment marks a change in the UK’s diplomatic representation in Prague, with King-Smith succeeding Matthew Field OBE.
Field will leave the Czech Republic post to take up another position within the Diplomatic Service after completing his tenure.
King-Smith will officially begin his new responsibilities in January 2027 following a period of pre-posting preparation.
Extensive Diplomatic Experience Ahead of New Role
King-Smith brings decades of experience across the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) and overseas diplomatic missions.
Most recently, he served as Deputy Director for Soft Power at the FCDO between 2024 and 2025.
Before that assignment, he represented the UK as His Majesty’s Ambassador to Albania from 2021 to 2024, a role he took up after completing Albanian language training and diplomatic preparations.
He is currently undergoing additional pre-posting training, including Czech language studies, ahead of his move to Prague.
Leadership Across Foreign Policy and Global Affairs
Throughout his career, King-Smith has held several senior positions covering international diplomacy, security and strategic communications.
In 2020, he jointly led international engagement for the UK government’s Coronavirus Taskforce while also contributing to the Global Vaccine Summit.
Between 2018 and 2020, he served as Deputy Director for Multilateral Policy and Global Coordinator of the Media Freedom Campaign.
Earlier appointments included leading the UK’s international counter-extremism work, overseeing strategic communications and security campaigns, and managing foreign policy initiatives within the Foreign and Commonwealth Office.
Wide International Posting Record
King-Smith’s diplomatic career has included assignments across Europe, the Middle East, Africa and South Asia.
He has served in Pakistan as Deputy Political Counsellor at the British High Commission in Islamabad before later becoming the UK’s representative for Punjab under the Department for International Development.
His overseas experience also includes senior diplomatic responsibilities in Israel, Kenya, Sudan, Iraq and Libya, where he undertook a range of political, security and leadership roles, including acting deputy head of mission and acting chargé d’affaires.
Longstanding Commitment to Sudan
Alongside his government service, King-Smith has maintained a longstanding humanitarian commitment to Sudan.
Since 2001, he has been a founding trustee of the Kids for Kids charitable foundation, an organisation that supports children and communities in the Darfur region.
Earlier in his diplomatic career, he also served at the British Embassy in Khartoum, where his responsibilities included peace affairs as well as oversight of political, economic and information sections.
Career Began in the Foreign Office Fast Stream
King-Smith joined the Foreign and Commonwealth Office through its fast stream programme in 1996.
His earliest assignments included work on Russian political affairs before undertaking full-time Arabic language training, laying the foundation for a diplomatic career spanning nearly three decades.
His appointment to the Czech Republic continues a career marked by senior leadership positions, international crisis management, regional expertise and extensive overseas diplomatic service.
