Authorities in Brazil have begun moving to demolish a 130-foot-high bridge following the death of a 21-year-old woman during a bungled rope jump that has triggered public outrage and renewed scrutiny of unregulated adventure tourism.
The structure, known locally as the Ponte do Esqueleto, is now set to be destroyed to prevent further incidents.
The decision comes just days after Maria Eduarda Rodrigues de Freitas fell to her death during what was meant to be a supervised thrill experience near Limeira, about 100 miles north of São Paulo.
Emergency Action Begins on Abandoned Structure
Work crews began securing the site on Wednesday morning, blocking access points and bringing in heavy machinery to prepare the abandoned railway bridge for eventual demolition.
Officials confirmed the destruction will take place in stages before the final controlled explosion.
The bridge, originally part of a disused rail project abandoned decades ago, has long been a hotspot for illegal rope jumping and bungee-style activities despite repeated warnings and visible danger signs.
Fatal Jump Linked to Lack of Safety Attachment
Investigators say Rodrigues de Freitas had paid roughly $56 to participate in the jump on Saturday.
She was reportedly wearing a harness and helmet but was not properly attached to any safety rope when she was pushed off the structure.
The fatal error has been described as a catastrophic failure by operators, and video evidence circulating in local media has intensified scrutiny of the group responsible for the event.
Growing Pressure Leads to Demolition Decision
Local councillor Bruna Magalhaes, who has campaigned for years against unregulated jumping operations at the site, said she had repeatedly warned authorities about the dangers.
Following the tragedy, she urged immediate demolition of the bridge.
Officials have now approved a plan that includes sealing the structure, constructing barriers, and ultimately demolishing it with explosives once preparations are complete.
Bridge Known for Danger and Illegal Activity
The Ponte do Esqueleto has long been associated with risky recreational jumps and has also gained a reputation as a suicide hotspot.
Despite clear warning signs, including signs reading “Danger, risk of death,” the site continued to attract thrill-seekers.
Evidence of makeshift equipment and poorly secured fixtures on the structure has previously raised concerns, with critics describing the setup as unsafe and unregulated.
Arrests Made as Investigation Continues
Three men linked to the operation have been arrested and charged with homicide with eventual intent, meaning they allegedly carried out a dangerous activity that resulted in death without intending to kill.
Investigators are also searching for a GoPro camera reportedly used by the victim during the jump, which may contain crucial footage of the incident.
Witness Accounts and Family Tributes
An off-duty nurse who witnessed the aftermath described trying to assist the victim before emergency responders arrived, but said the injuries were too severe for survival.
Rodrigues de Freitas’s family has expressed deep grief, with her mother posting emotional tributes online following the burial, describing her daughter’s death as devastating and calling attention to the failed safety measures that led to the tragedy.
Calls for Accountability and Closure
As demolition plans move forward, officials and local representatives say the priority is preventing any repeat of the incident.
For many in the community, however, the decision comes after years of warnings that went unheeded, ending in a tragedy that has now reshaped the future of the abandoned bridge.
