Spectators Cheer as Competitors Hurl Black Pudding Slices to Knock Yorkshire Puddings from 20-Foot Plinth in Ramsbottom

Today, Ramsbottom, Lancs, was abuzz with excitement as hundreds of spectators flocked to witness the World Black Pudding Throwing Championships.

This annual event is a highlight for the quirky competition where participants aim to knock Yorkshire puddings off a towering 20-foot-high plinth using slices of Lancashire black pudding.

A Historic and Quirky Challenge

The competition harks back to a rather unusual historical moment from 1455 during the War of the Roses.

According to legend, during a battle in nearby Stubbins, the combatants from the House of Lancaster and the House of York ran out of ammunition.

In a moment of desperation, they began tossing food at each other—Lancashire folks used black pudding, while Yorkshire’s side employed Yorkshire puddings.

This odd but memorable battle inspired today’s competition, which was revived in the 1980s by a local pub landlord.

Triumph and Tradition

This year’s championship saw 18-year-old Harry Ogden emerge victorious, knocking down six Yorkshire puddings from the high plinth.

Harry, who stepped in for his ill mother, was thrilled by his win.

“I’m ecstatic—it’s crazy!” he exclaimed.

He reflected on the community spirit of the event, noting, “It’s amazing for the community to come together once a year for such a fun competition.

There are no hard feelings—just a lot of enjoyment.”

The Rules and Atmosphere

Competitors of all ages take turns hurling black pudding slices at the high plinth in hopes of dislodging the dozen Yorkshire puddings.

With a fee of just £1 since 1984, the sport remains accessible but notoriously challenging.

Participants stand on a golden grid and try their best to hit their target with underarm throws, with those who succeed often receiving enthusiastic cheers.

Remarkably, winners have come from as far afield as Turkey and Australia, proving the event’s global appeal.

Looking Forward

As the competition concludes, there’s already anticipation for next year’s event.

With its unique blend of history, tradition, and community spirit, the World Black Pudding Throwing Championships continue to captivate and entertain participants and spectators alike.
