Rise: The Siya Kolisi Story Wins Prestigious Sportel Award
In a significant recognition of its inspirational impact, the documentary “Rise: The Siya Kolisi Story” has been honored with a prestigious Sportel Award.
This accolade acknowledges the remarkable achievements of the documentary, which delves into the extraordinary journey of Siya Kolisi, a symbol of hope, resilience, and unity.
The Extraordinary Journey of Siya Kolisi
“Rise: The Siya Kolisi Story” sheds light on the life of South Africa’s first black African rugby captain, Siya Kolisi.
Against all odds, he led the Springboks to victory in the 2019 World Cup, uniting a country in the process.
The documentary showcases Kolisi’s vulnerabilities as he reflects on the numerous challenges he faced, from humble beginnings to rugby stardom.
A Charitable Mission
Proceeds from the documentary are directed back to under-resourced communities through the Kolisi Foundation, a charity established by Siya Kolisi and his wife Rachel.
The Foundation is committed to changing narratives of inequality, particularly in the areas of food insecurity, gender-based violence, sports, and education.
Recognizing Athletes as Role Models
This award reflects the mission of Peace and Sport, which emphasizes the significance of athletes as role models in society and mentors in their social commitment.
Siya Kolisi’s Perspective
Siya Kolisi, a “Champion for Peace,” expressed his pride in receiving the Peace and Sport award for his documentary.
He intended to authentically portray life in the township and advocate for investment in these areas.
For Kolisi, his memories from the township are among the best, and it’s the people in his community who motivate him every day.
He sees this platform as an opportunity to change the stories of children growing up in similar circumstances and to transform mindsets while they live in challenging conditions.
Embodying Ubuntu
Mahlatse Mashua, a board member of The Kolisi Foundation, welcomed the award.
He described “Rise” as an inspiring story that challenges perspectives and encourages everyone to play a role.
Mashua highlighted the documentary’s power in revealing social narratives and emphasized the importance of community in paving pathways to success, following in the footsteps of individuals like Siya Kolisi.
