The Nigerian Senate has called for an intensified security operation across border communities in Taraba, Plateau and Bauchi states following a deadly attack in Binnari community, Karim Lamido Local Government Area of Taraba State.

The lawmakers cited reports that about 80 people were killed by armed bandits and urged security agencies to establish additional security camps and strengthen surveillance in vulnerable areas to prevent further attacks.

The resolutions were adopted after Senator Isa Shuaibu Lau moved a motion of urgent national importance during Wednesday’s plenary session.

Senator Lau Raises Alarm Over Civilian Deaths

Moving the motion, Lau expressed concern over the killing of civilians and the continuing attacks on rural communities.

He warned that the violence had heightened fear among residents, forced people from their homes and disrupted normal community life.

“The continued activities of armed bandits in rural communities undermined the government’s constitutional responsibility to protect lives and property,” Lau said.

The Senate warned that failing to address the recurring attacks could result in further deaths, destruction of property, displacement and worsening humanitarian conditions.

Senate Urges Security Agencies to Prevent Further Attacks

The lawmakers called on security agencies to take decisive action against those responsible for the violence and strengthen protection for residents of affected communities.

They urged the establishment of additional security camps and intensified surveillance across the affected border areas.

The Senate also stressed that communities should not be left vulnerable to armed criminal groups, calling for measures to prevent further bloodshed and restore peace.

NEMA and North-East Development Commission Asked to Provide Relief

Alongside the security measures, the Senate called on the National Emergency Management Agency and the North-East Development Commission to provide urgent relief materials to communities affected by the attacks.

The requested assistance is intended to support residents facing the consequences of the violence.

Lawmakers also observed a minute’s silence in honour of those killed.

Conflicting Reports Emerge Over Number of Victims

The reported death toll from the Binnari attack has varied across accounts.

While the Senate cited approximately 80 fatalities in its call for an intensified security response, subsequent community reports put the number of people killed at 50.

The differing figures have emerged amid continued concern over the scale of the attack and its impact on the affected community.

Gunmen Attacked Binnari After Friday Prayers

The attack occurred on Friday, October 23, shortly after Jumu’ah prayers. Gunmen reportedly entered Binnari at about 3pm and opened fire while looting food items from shops and residential buildings.

The attackers were also reported to have set shops and motorcycles on fire, causing panic and further damage in the community.

The gunmen were suspected of having crossed into Taraba from neighbouring Plateau State, raising concerns about security along state boundaries.

Senate Seeks Coordinated Response Across Affected States

The Senate’s intervention follows continued security challenges in parts of Nigeria’s North-East and North-Central regions, where armed groups have threatened rural communities, disrupted livelihoods and contributed to displacement.

The lawmakers’ resolutions call for stronger security deployments, increased surveillance and emergency assistance to affected residents across the border communities of Taraba, Plateau and Bauchi states.
