RuPaul Andre Charles, known professionally as RuPaul, was born on 17 November 1960 in San Diego, California. The television host, actor, singer and drag performer grew up as the only boy among four children, with three sisters who influenced his early interests in fashion and performance.
His parents, Ernestine “Toni” Fontenette Charles and Irving Andrew Charles, were both originally from Louisiana. According to RuPaul’s memoir, The House of Hidden Meanings, they met on a blind date in Beaumont, Texas, where Irving was serving in the army and Ernestine worked as a secretary.
His Father Served in the Korean War
RuPaul’s father, Irving Andrew Charles, was born and raised in Mansfield, near Shreveport, Louisiana. He served in the US Army during the Korean War before moving his family to San Diego, where he worked as an electrician and later owned a beauty supply business.
RuPaul described his father as charming but unfaithful and said he was not committed to raising his children.
In his 2024 memoir, RuPaul recounted preparing a sharp response when he suspected his father wanted to question him about being gay. He described confronting his father over his shortcomings as a parent, after which his father received little further attention in the account.
His Mother Helped Shape His Catchphrase
RuPaul’s mother, Ernestine “Toni” Fontenette Charles, was born in St. Martinville, Louisiana, in the Acadiana region. She worked as a clerk in the registrar’s office at San Diego City College and raised RuPaul and his sisters largely on her own after her marriage ended.
RuPaul recalled that neighbourhood children called his mother “Mean Miss Charles”, although she also played a significant role in shaping his outlook and distinctive expressions.
In an interview with NPR, he credited her with inspiring his well-known RuPaul’s Drag Race catchphrase: “If you can’t love yourself, how in the hell are you going to love somebody else?”
He has also spoken about inheriting a strong sense of spirituality from his mother, describing the Louisiana region where she grew up as a deeply spiritual place.
His Parents’ Marriage Was Marked by Conflict
RuPaul grew up in a strict Catholic household with his mother and three sisters. He has described his childhood as difficult, with his parents’ marriage marked by intense arguments and episodes of conflict.
In one incident recalled in accounts of his early life, his mother threatened to set fire to his father’s convertible, pouring gasoline over it while holding a book of matches.
RuPaul described his mother as sceptical and his father as charismatic but superficial. Despite the difficulties at home, he recalled that his mother helped shape his ambitions.
She once told him that a psychic had predicted he would become a star. RuPaul said the prediction made him feel “anointed” and influenced his determination to pursue a career in entertainment.
Ernestine Charles Died in 1993
RuPaul’s mother died of cancer in San Diego on 25 April 1993, aged 65.
Her death occurred on the same day RuPaul performed at the March on Washington for queer community rights. At the time, his entertainment career was gaining wider recognition.
Ernestine’s influence has remained a recurring subject in RuPaul’s reflections on his childhood, spirituality and development as a performer.
RuPaul Grew Up With Three Sisters
RuPaul has three sisters: twins Renae and Renetta Charles, born in 1953, and younger sister Rozy Charles, born in 1962.
After their parents divorced, the children continued living with their mother. RuPaul has described his older twin sisters as important influences during his formative years.
Renae and Renetta enjoyed fashion and glamour, helping encourage his interest in performers such as Cher and Diana Ross.
When RuPaul was 15, he moved to Atlanta, Georgia, with his older sister Renetta. He attended the Northside School of Performing Arts, a move that became an important part of his early development in entertainment.
As the only boy in the family, he also experimented with wearing his sisters’ clothes and drew inspiration from stars including Diana Ross and Jane Fonda.
Rozy, the youngest sibling, features less prominently in public accounts of RuPaul’s life.
RuPaul’s Louisiana Creole and African-American Heritage
RuPaul’s family background reflects his father’s African-American heritage and his mother’s Louisiana Creole ancestry.
His maternal ancestry includes African and French roots, as well as more distant Swiss-German connections. Accounts of his family history identify ancestors including André Adrien Mercier, born around 1766 in Nantes, France, and Nicholas Wiltz, born around 1699 in the Canton of Bern, Switzerland.
Both of RuPaul’s parents came from Louisiana before establishing their family in California.
RuPaul Identifies as Male Outside Drag
RuPaul identifies as male outside drag and generally uses he/him pronouns in professional settings.
In his memoir, he described feeling both male and female, explaining that he sometimes felt more masculine while performing in drag because of the sense of power it gave him.
He has also described drag as a means of reclaiming power as a feminine Black man who challenged conventional social expectations.
RuPaul’s Marriage to Georges LeBar
RuPaul married Georges LeBar in 2017. LeBar is an Australian-born rancher and artist, and the couple have maintained a largely private relationship.
They share a mansion in the Coldwater Canyon area of Beverly Hills, with the property reported to have cost approximately $13.7 million.
