Russian President Vladimir Putin has become the subject of social media memes after photographs of him meeting Mozambique’s President Daniel Chapo highlighted the difference in their heights.
The two leaders met on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, at the Summit of Heads of State and Government of the Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF), held at the Grand Kremlin Palace in Moscow.
Chapo, who is reported to be 6ft 5in tall, later shared photographs of the encounter that showed him standing considerably taller than Putin, whose height is reported to be 5ft 7in.
The images prompted social media users to make jokes about the Russian president’s stature, with several edited pictures circulating online.
Edited Photographs Fuel Memes About Putin’s Height
One widely shared meme portrayed Chapo as Gandalf, the wizard from The Lord of the Rings, while depicting Putin as a barefoot hobbit.
Another edited image showed Putin appearing even shorter, accompanied by the caption: “Why did you enlarge Putin on your photo? Here’s the original.”
Other posts featured jokes about the Russian president needing steps or binoculars to match the height of his Mozambican counterpart.
One social media user wrote that Putin “must feel very insecure, looking up,” while another commented: “How dare you make Putin appear as the little man.”
A third asked: “Why he so tiny?”
Kremlin Photograph Appears to Use a Different Camera Angle
The Kremlin did not initially release photographs of the meeting. After Chapo published his images, official photographers for the Russian president released a picture taken from a lower angle, which made Putin appear taller.
The difference between the photographs became another focus of online discussion, with users comparing the images shared by the two leaders.
The encounter took place during the GECF summit, which brought together heads of state and government in Moscow.
Reports Have Linked Putin’s Public Image to His Height
Putin has frequently been the subject of speculation about his height and the measures used to manage his public image.
In 2023, photographs showed him wearing high-heeled shoes while appearing alongside students in Moscow. The footwear was cited in reports discussing efforts to project a strong, masculine image.
A report by the Express in 2015 also quoted an unnamed Kremlin insider as saying that official photographs were arranged to avoid making other people appear taller than Putin.
“That’s why his bodyguards are always shorter than he is, to give the impression Putin is a tall person,” the source reportedly said.
Research Has Examined the Role of Height in Politics
The attention surrounding the photographs comes amid longstanding discussion about whether height influences how politicians are perceived.
In 2020, The Economist reported on research suggesting that taller politicians outperformed their rivals in opinion polls on average.
The research was linked to findings that taller people tend, on average, to report higher self-esteem and may be perceived by others as healthier, more intelligent and more authoritative.
The photographs of Putin and Chapo have renewed online discussion of the subject, with social media users focusing on the visible height difference between the two presidents.
