A Ryanair flight traveling from Greece to Germany was forced to make an emergency return to its departure airport after a passenger window reportedly detached during the flight, leaving one man injured and causing panic among those on board.
Mid-Flight Emergency Forces Aircraft to Turn Back
The Boeing 737-800 departed Thessaloniki, Greece, for Memmingen, Germany, at approximately 5:55 a.m. local time on Friday.
However, only a short time after takeoff, while the aircraft was climbing to an altitude of around 20,000 feet, passengers reported hearing a loud explosion-like noise inside the cabin.
According to witness accounts, one of the aircraft’s windows suddenly gave way, prompting the flight crew to abandon the journey and return immediately to Thessaloniki Airport.
Flight tracking information shows the aircraft landed safely about one hour and 14 minutes after departure.
Passengers Describe Dramatic Moments Inside the Cabin
Several passengers described chaotic scenes following the window failure.
Witnesses claimed that the man seated beside the damaged window was partially pulled toward the opening by the rapid loss of cabin pressure.
According to eyewitness reports shared with German and Greek media, the passenger’s head and shoulders were forced outside the aircraft while nearby travelers and his wife struggled to hold onto him until he could be pulled safely back into the cabin.
Oxygen masks were automatically deployed as the emergency unfolded.
Injured Traveler Receives Medical Treatment
The injured passenger has been identified by reports as a 61-year-old Serbian national.
He reportedly suffered neck injuries along with abrasions and burns caused during the incident.
Medical personnel treated him after the aircraft landed back in Thessaloniki.
Although he remained conscious, reports indicated that he was experiencing significant shock following the ordeal.
Another passenger, a pregnant woman, was also taken to a local hospital as a precaution.
Local media later reported that she was in good condition and had since been discharged.
Ryanair Confirms Window Detached During Flight
In a statement, Ryanair confirmed that the aircraft returned shortly after departure because a passenger window became dislodged during the flight.
The airline said the aircraft landed normally and all passengers safely returned to the terminal.
It added that one passenger requested medical assistance upon landing and received treatment on the ground.
To reduce disruption, Ryanair arranged a replacement aircraft, which departed Thessaloniki for Memmingen later that morning at approximately 9:53 a.m. local time.
Cause of the Incident Remains Under Investigation
Authorities have not yet confirmed what caused the window to detach during the flight.
However, Greek media reports have suggested that debris from the aircraft’s engine may have struck the window after part of the engine allegedly broke away.
Those reports remain unconfirmed, and investigators are expected to examine the aircraft to determine exactly what led to the mid-air emergency.
The pilot’s decision to return immediately to Thessaloniki ensured the flight concluded safely despite the frightening incident.
