South Africa’s Zulu monarch, King Misuzulu kaZwelithini, has publicly expressed regret after a leaked video showing him verbally attacking one of his wives spread widely across social media.
The footage has ignited debate across the country, drawing attention to issues surrounding the royal household, traditional gender roles and violence against women.
Palace Says King Regrets the Incident
The king’s office released a statement acknowledging that the video had caused considerable distress and embarrassment within both the royal family and the wider Zulu community.
According to the statement, the monarch deeply regrets the incident and recognises the impact the footage has had on those who look to the Zulu royal family as a symbol of cultural leadership.
Officials also stressed that the recording was made some time ago and does not reflect the current situation inside the royal household.
Viral Footage Shows Heated Exchange
The controversy erupted after a video surfaced online showing King Misuzulu in an emotional confrontation with Queen Nomzamo Myeni, whom he married in November last year.
During the exchange, the king accused the queen of leaving home without informing him and criticised her for travelling without what he described as her husband’s permission.
He also accused her of being unfaithful, repeatedly insulted her and threatened to physically assault her before demanding that she leave the residence.
The queen, who appeared to be recording the incident herself, remained silent throughout most of the confrontation.
As the clip came to an end, she quietly remarked, “This is the life I live, day and night.”
Marriage Expectations Become Part of the Debate
Much of the king’s criticism centred on his belief that a wife should seek her husband’s approval before travelling or making certain decisions.
At one stage during the argument, he claimed he already had another girlfriend waiting for him before telling Queen Nomzamo that he wanted her to leave.
The remarks have fuelled widespread public discussion about relationships within the royal household and the expectations placed on women under traditional customs.
Zulu Monarch Holds Powerful Cultural Influence
Although the Zulu king does not exercise executive political authority, his position carries enormous cultural significance in South Africa.
Often referred to as the “lion of the nation,” King Misuzulu serves as the custodian of longstanding Zulu traditions, including those surrounding marriage and polygamy.
His office is supported through public funding worth several million dollars annually, reflecting the importance of the monarchy within the country’s cultural landscape.
Incident Renews Focus on Women’s Rights
The leaked video has also reignited conversations about gender equality and violence against women in South Africa.
Zulu society has historically been deeply patriarchal, with many traditional customs placing men in positions of authority within the family.
Critics argue that such expectations can contribute to unequal treatment of women.
The discussion comes against the backdrop of South Africa’s ongoing struggle with gender-based violence, one of the country’s most pressing social challenges.
Last year, the government formally declared gender-based violence a national disaster in response to persistently high levels of abuse.
Royal Family Faces Renewed Public Scrutiny
The latest controversy adds to a series of challenges that have surrounded the Zulu monarchy in recent years, including legal disputes and public attention on the king’s personal relationships.
While the palace insists the leaked recording reflects events from the past rather than the present, the incident has once again placed the royal household under intense public scrutiny as South Africans continue debating the balance between cultural traditions, accountability and the protection of women’s rights.
