The disappearance of a young Russian woman during a trip to Serbia has ended in tragedy after authorities discovered her body concealed inside a suitcase in a canal outside Belgrade.
The case has sparked a major criminal investigation, with police already making several arrests as they work to determine exactly what happened.
Holiday Trip Takes a Tragic Turn
Lyudmila Turkova, a 27-year-old woman from St. Petersburg, arrived in Serbia on July 23 for what was expected to be a short stay.
After landing in Belgrade, she checked into a rented apartment in the city’s modern Belgrade Waterfront neighborhood.
Family members remained in contact with her during the first days of the trip, but communication suddenly stopped during the night of July 25.
Repeated phone calls and messages went unanswered, prompting growing concern among relatives and friends, who later reported her missing.
Last Known Plans Remain Unclear
According to early information gathered by investigators, Turkova intended to spend the evening of her disappearance at a local nightclub.
However, authorities have not confirmed whether she ever arrived at the venue, leaving investigators to piece together her final known movements before she vanished without explanation.
Body Recovered From Canal Outside Belgrade
The search came to a grim conclusion on the evening of July 30 when police located a suitcase submerged in a canal near Padinska Skela, a rural settlement situated across the Danube River from central Belgrade.
Inside the suitcase, officers discovered the body of the missing tourist.
Crime scene investigators carried out a detailed examination of the area before transferring the remains to Serbia’s Institute of Forensic Medicine.
A post-mortem examination is expected to establish the exact cause and circumstances of her death.
Police Detain Multiple Suspects
Serbian media reports indicate that law enforcement officers have detained several individuals as part of the investigation.
Among those arrested is a Turkish national who is believed to be a key suspect in the killing.
Authorities reportedly intercepted and arrested him at Belgrade’s airport while he was allegedly attempting to leave the country.
