Russian State Duma ousts Andrey Gurulev from Defense Committee following his call for nuking the Netherlands and other extreme proposals

Changes are underway in the Russian State Duma, with Lieutenant General Andrey Gurulev, a well-known and often controversial figure, being reassigned.

Previously a member of the Defense Committee, he is now set to take on a new role in the committee for regional policy and local self-government.

A Controversial Figure in Russian Politics

Gurulev has built a reputation not just for his military background but also for his outspoken and often inflammatory remarks.

He has made headlines for advocating extreme measures, including a proposed nuclear strike on the Netherlands, reinstating a tax on childlessness, and harshly criticizing those who oppose President Vladimir Putin’s policies.

Despite these controversies, Gurulev has accepted the reassignment, calling it a decision by leadership that aligns with his focus on regional issues.

He has expressed confidence that his experience will help improve local governance and enhance the quality of life for Russian citizens.

Nuclear Strike and Other Extreme Proposals

One of Gurulev’s most infamous statements was his suggestion that Russia should target the Netherlands due to its role in Europe’s energy infrastructure.

He claimed that since a large percentage of Europe’s hydrocarbon fuel supply passes through Dutch ports, attacking them could cripple European economies.

In another proposal, he suggested bringing back the Soviet-era tax on childlessness, arguing that a person’s true legacy is in their children.

However, this idea was quickly dismissed by State Duma Speaker Vyacheslav Volodin, who advised deputies to think carefully before making public policy suggestions.

Harsh Words for Opposition Voices

Gurulev has not been shy about his views on political opposition.

In one of his statements, he referred to Russians who do not support President Putin as “scum” and suggested that such individuals should be removed from society.

Later, he clarified that he was referring specifically to those who advocate for ending Russia’s military actions, rather than the entire opposition.

There were also reports that he supported reviving the notorious Soviet-era GULAG prison camps.

However, he later stated that his comments were personal opinions rather than official policy proposals, specifically aimed at those he believes are actively harming the state.

Scandal Involving His Assistant

Adding to the controversy, in December, Gurulev’s assistant, Adam Isluev, was involved in a drunken altercation on a flight from Moscow to Chita.

Witnesses recorded Isluev swearing at passengers and crew, making threats, and even assaulting a flight attendant. Authorities removed him from the flight and detained him.

In response, Gurulev swiftly fired Isluev and issued a public apology for his assistant’s behavior.

What is the State Duma?

For context, the State Duma is the lower house of Russia’s Federal Assembly, with the Federation Council serving as the upper house.

Established in 1993 following the Russian constitutional crisis, the Duma replaced the former Supreme Soviet.

It is based in central Moscow, near Manege Square, and plays a crucial role in shaping national policies and legislation.

What’s Next?

With his reassignment, Gurulev’s future influence in Russian politics remains to be seen.

While he claims his new position will allow him to focus on local governance, his history of controversial statements suggests he is unlikely to fade from the spotlight anytime soon.

How he will navigate this shift—and whether his extreme rhetoric continues—will be closely watched in the coming months.
