Russia and Iran held high-level interministerial consultations in Moscow on August 10 focused on arms control, disarmament and the prevention of nuclear and other weapons proliferation.

The talks brought together senior officials from both countries as Moscow and Tehran seek to strengthen coordination on sensitive international security issues amid heightened geopolitical tensions.

Senior Foreign Ministry Officials Lead Consultations

The Russian delegation was headed by Oleg Postnikov, Director of the Russian Foreign Ministry’s Department for Non-Proliferation and Arms Control.

Iran was represented by Mohammad Hassan-Nejad Pirkouhi, Director-General of the Department of International Peace and Security Affairs at the Iranian Foreign Ministry.

The meeting provided the two sides with an opportunity to review a broad range of issues surrounding international arms control and non-proliferation.

Talks Linked to Russia-Iran Strategic Partnership

Moscow described the consultations as an important component of implementing the Treaty on Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between Russia and Iran.

The two governments have sought to expand cooperation across multiple areas, with security and international affairs forming an increasingly prominent part of their bilateral relationship.

Officials conducted what Russia described as a substantive assessment of existing challenges and unresolved issues in arms control, disarmament and non-proliferation.

Coordination Planned Ahead of UN General Assembly

A significant part of the discussions focused on strengthening Russian-Iranian coordination ahead of the First Committee of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly.

The committee deals primarily with disarmament and international security matters, making closer coordination between Moscow and Tehran particularly relevant as governments prepare their positions on upcoming debates.

The countries also discussed cooperation surrounding major international meetings and mechanisms connected with the International Atomic Energy Agency, the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons and the Biological Weapons Convention.

Space and Other International Security Issues Discussed

The consultations extended beyond conventional arms-control negotiations.

Russian and Iranian officials also considered upcoming international forums dealing with the peaceful uses of outer space, alongside other multilateral platforms addressing international security and non-proliferation.

The discussions reflect the breadth of issues covered by the two countries’ regular diplomatic consultations.

Iran’s Nuclear Programme Takes Center Stage

The future of Iran’s nuclear programme received particular attention during the meeting.

According to the Russian Foreign Ministry, the two sides discussed prospects for addressing the crisis that Moscow attributes to what it calls U.S.-Israeli aggression against Iran, as well as ways of resolving outstanding issues surrounding Tehran’s nuclear activities.

The issue remains one of the most sensitive subjects in international non-proliferation diplomacy, particularly amid wider tensions between Iran, Israel and the United States.

Moscow and Tehran Pledge Continued Contacts

Both delegations expressed interest in maintaining intensive bilateral consultations on arms control, disarmament and non-proliferation.

The two countries said future discussions would continue through different diplomatic formats, signaling their intention to maintain close coordination on international security matters.

The latest meeting underscores the expanding strategic dialogue between Moscow and Tehran as both governments seek greater coordination within major international security institutions.
