A £120,000 Range Rover SVR became the centre of an embarrassing seaside mishap after an attempt to recover a stranded van on Scarborough beach in North Yorkshire ended with both vehicles being swallowed by the incoming tide.

What began as a well-intentioned recovery effort quickly spiralled out of control when the high-powered 567bhp SUV tried to tow a Transit van that had already become stuck in soft, wet sand near the shoreline.

Van Stuck While Recovering Jet Skis

According to people at the scene, the white Transit van had been driven onto the beach to collect two jet skis.

But the plan went wrong almost immediately when the vehicle became bogged down in the sand.

Instead of escaping, the van sank deeper as the tide began to creep in, leaving its occupants scrambling for solutions as conditions worsened.

Range Rover Steps In — and Gets Caught Out

As the situation developed, a Range Rover SVR was brought in to pull the van free.

The luxury 4×4, equipped with sand driving modes and considerable towing power, initially appeared capable of handling the recovery.

However, repeated attempts to drag the van back to solid ground failed.

Witnesses say the SUV itself began to lose traction, sinking into the same unstable sand it was meant to conquer.

At one point, bystanders watched as one man tried pushing from behind while another revved the engine from the driver’s seat.

Instead of moving forward, the vehicle kicked up clouds of sandy seawater and sank further into difficulty.

Crowds Watch as Efforts Turn Chaotic

A growing crowd gathered on the beach as the recovery attempt continued, with some locals reportedly offering advice on how to free the vehicles using the jet skis.

Those suggestions were allegedly dismissed by the group, who insisted they could handle the situation themselves.

Attempts were also made to dig out the wheels using a plastic spade, but the rising tide made the task increasingly hopeless.

A blue jet ski could be seen nearby in the water, reinforcing how close the entire scene was to the incoming sea.

Rising Tide Swallows Both Vehicles

As the evening wore on, the tide continued to rise, sealing the fate of both vehicles.

Despite repeated efforts, neither the van nor the Range Rover could be freed in time.

By nightfall, the situation had deteriorated so far that only part of the van—reportedly its aerial—remained visible above the waterline, with both vehicles largely submerged.

Eyewitnesses described a slow but steady disappearance as seawater engulfed the stranded machines.

Eyewitness Account of the Beach Disaster

Sammy Hellewell, 39, who filmed the incident while heading to a nearby restaurant, said the scene unfolded over several hours and quickly became difficult to watch.

She explained that the van had already been stuck when the Range Rover arrived to help, adding that the recovery attempt only made things worse.

According to her account, the group rejected outside assistance and continued trying to free the vehicles using the jet skis, despite warnings from locals that the sand conditions and tide made the effort risky.

She also described how both vehicles were eventually left completely submerged by around 10:30pm, with only the van’s aerial still visible above the water.

Aftermath and Recovery Operation

By the end of the ordeal, both the £120,000 Range Rover SVR and the Transit van had been fully claimed by the sea.

Recovery workers later moved in, with diggers eventually used to haul both vehicles off the beach once conditions allowed.

Authorities and onlookers suggested the recovery effort may result in significant financial consequences, with reports indicating insurance could be affected due to the circumstances of the incident.
