A 28-year-old man has died after drowning in Richards Bay early on Sunday morning, 4 October.

Emergency services were called to the Bay Hall area, near the Zululand Multi Sports Club, at about 06:45 following reports that a person was in distress in the water.

The incident prompted a multi-agency response involving rescue teams, police and medical personnel.

Emergency Teams Launch Rescue Response

NSRI Richards Bay deputy station commander Manie le Roux said the station’s duty crew was activated after receiving reports of a drowning in progress.

NSRI rescue swimmers and a rescue vehicle were among those dispatched to the scene, alongside the South African Police Service, Police Search and Rescue’s Water Policing and Diving Service, uMhlathuze Fire and Rescue Service and Medcare 24 EMS.

Local lifeguards who had reported for duty also assisted emergency personnel at the scene.

CPR Efforts Continue After Man Is Recovered

When rescue and emergency teams arrived, the man had already been recovered from the water.

According to the NSRI, bystanders acting as Good Samaritans are believed to have helped bring him out of the water following the drowning incident.

Rescuers and medical teams immediately began cardiopulmonary resuscitation in an attempt to revive him.

Despite extensive efforts to resuscitate the man, paramedics ultimately declared him deceased after all attempts to save his life were exhausted.

Police Open Inquest Into Death

Following the man’s death, his body was handed over to police and Government Health Forensic Pathology Services.

Police have opened an inquest docket as investigations into the circumstances surrounding the drowning continue.

Authorities have not indicated that foul play is suspected.

Another KwaZulu-Natal Beach Incident Reported

The Richards Bay drowning occurred just a day after another serious water-related incident was reported at Cape Vidal beach.

A teenage boy was reported missing on Saturday afternoon, 3 October, after being caught in a rip current while swimming.

The incidents serve as another reminder of the dangers posed by strong currents and changing conditions in coastal waters, particularly during periods when beaches and swimming areas are busy.

Beachgoers are urged to use designated swimming areas, follow lifeguard instructions and avoid entering the water when conditions are considered unsafe.
