Two people were killed and several others injured following a large overnight drone attack across parts of Russia, according to Russian regional authorities, with the Moscow Region reporting some of the most serious damage.
Moscow Region Governor Andrey Vorobyov said nine people were injured in his region, while officials reported additional casualties in the Smolensk and Bryansk regions and in Russian-controlled Gorlovka in eastern Ukraine.
Russia’s Defense Ministry attributed the drones to Ukraine and said hundreds were intercepted between the evening of October 5 and the morning of October 6.

Russian Defense Ministry Claims 868 Drones Intercepted
Russia’s Defense Ministry said air-defense systems intercepted and destroyed 868 Ukrainian fixed-wing drones between 8 p.m. Moscow time on October 5 and 9 a.m. on October 6.
According to the ministry, interceptions took place over the Belgorod, Bryansk, Kaluga, Kursk, Lipetsk, Oryol, Ryazan, Smolensk, Tver, Tula and Moscow regions, as well as Crimea and the Sea of Azov.
Regional officials separately reported dozens of interceptions within their respective territories.
Kaluga Governor Vladislav Shapsha said 46 drones were brought down over his region, while Tula Governor Dmitry Milyaev reported 32 interceptions. Smolensk Governor Vasily Anokhin said 19 drones were shot down there.
Moscow Region Becomes Major Focus of Overnight Attack
The Moscow area accounted for a significant portion of the reported drone activity.
According to calculations based on statements from Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin, air defenses had destroyed 161 drones approaching the Russian capital since the beginning of the day.
Sobyanin also said approximately 650 drones had been heading toward the wider Moscow Region between 8:30 p.m. on October 5 and 5 a.m. the following morning.
He said most were intercepted at long range, while 105 were destroyed closer to Moscow.
Vorobyov separately reported that air-defense and electronic-warfare systems brought down 185 drones over the Moscow Region.
Russian authorities described the operation as one of the largest attempted drone attacks against Moscow in the past two years.
Two Men Killed in Moscow Region
Authorities reported two fatalities in separate locations around Moscow.
Vorobyov said a 20-year-old man was killed in the village of Radumlya in the Solnechnogorsk district.
In Barybino in the Domodedovo district, emergency workers recovered the body of a 71-year-old man from beneath the rubble of a destroyed private residence.
Nine people were injured across the Moscow Region, according to the governor.
Residents Hospitalized With Shrapnel and Other Injuries
In Pokrovskoye, authorities said a man suffering from shrapnel wounds was taken to hospital.
Two people from Yadromino and Gorok in the Istra district were also hospitalized, with one expected to undergo surgery.
Three residents of Lyakhovo in the Domodedovo district required medical treatment following the attack.
Domodedovo district head Yevgeniya Khrustaleva separately reported seven injuries in the district, including a child. Three of those injured were hospitalized.
Dozens of Homes Damaged Across Moscow Region
The overnight attack also caused extensive property damage, according to regional authorities.
Vorobyov said 47 private homes were damaged across seven districts of the Moscow Region.
Ten houses were reported damaged in Istra, alongside outbuildings and vehicles in communities including Safontiyevo, Torlopovo, Gorki and Yadromino.
In Pokrovskoye, officials reported damage to the facade and windows of a house.
A private home caught fire in Lobanovo, while another residence was destroyed in Barybino.
Several houses were also reported damaged in the Dmitrov district.
Drone Crash Sparks Warehouse Fire
In Litvinovo in the Solnechnogorsk district, authorities said a drone crashed onto the roof of a store warehouse, starting a fire.
District head Konstantin Mikhalkov said 46 employees were evacuated to safety.
A cargo truck was damaged, while two private residences and a car were also affected elsewhere in the district. Nine additional vehicles were reported burned.
Vorobyov later said the warehouse fire had been extinguished.
Drone Reportedly Crashes Into Parking Area
Another drone reportedly came down in a parking lot in the village of Durykino, also in the Solnechnogorsk district.
Mikhalkov said 19 vehicles were damaged, although no injuries were reported.
Firefighters extinguished the resulting blaze before it could cause more extensive damage, according to local authorities.
Apartment Buildings and Power Infrastructure Affected
Four apartments in a residential building in Lobanovo were damaged, including shattered windows and balcony glass, according to Vorobyov.
No injuries were reported there and residents did not need to be evacuated.
Windows at a nearby boiler facility were also damaged.
In Domodedovo, authorities said debris from drones damaged an overhead electricity line, causing temporary power outages.
Electricity was subsequently restored to most homes around Lyakhovo, Dobrecheno, Bekhteyevo and Krasny Put, while repair work continued in Lobanovo.
Preliminary assessments identified property damage at 33 locations in Domodedovo, mainly involving individual houses, although three apartment buildings were also affected.
Smolensk and Bryansk Report Additional Injuries
Casualties were also reported outside the Moscow Region.
Smolensk Governor Vasily Anokhin said one person was injured when a drone struck a private residence.
The individual reportedly declined hospitalization.
In Belaya Berezka in the Bryansk Region, Governor Yegor Kovalchuk said two civilians were injured during what he described as a large drone attack.
Seven Reportedly Injured in Gorlovka Bus Strike
Officials in Russian-controlled Gorlovka in the Donetsk region also reported casualties after a drone struck a passenger bus.
Mayor Ivan Prikhodko said seven civilians were injured.
Vladimir Mironov, director of the Gorsvet passenger transport company, told TASS that a drone struck the roof of the bus and that one passenger suffered a severe leg injury.
According to the regional health authorities cited by TASS, two people were hospitalized in moderate condition, while five others received outpatient treatment.
Officials said no children were among those injured.
Russian Investigators Open Terrorism Case
Russia’s Investigative Committee announced a criminal investigation following the attacks in the Moscow Region and Russian-controlled parts of the Donetsk region.
Committee spokeswoman Svetlana Petrenko said investigators had opened a case under Russia’s terrorism legislation.
According to Petrenko, investigators are collecting evidence and attempting to establish the types and models of drones used.
Russian authorities also said they intend to identify Ukrainian military personnel they believe were involved in organizing the attacks.
