PSL Chairman Irvin Khoza Talks About the Impact of Betway Sponsorship and the Delay of the New Trophy Amid 2024/25 Season Launch in South Africa

As the 2024/2025 season kicks off, PSL chairman Irvin Khoza has shared the reasons behind the delay in unveiling the new Betway Premiership trophy.

The trophy, which marks a new chapter for the league, is taking longer than expected due to its special design and the cultural significance it holds.

The Shift in Sponsorship

This season, a significant change has taken place with Betway replacing DStv as the title sponsor of the PSL.

The switch comes even though DStv still had a year left on its sponsorship agreement.

MultiChoice, DStv’s parent company, has been facing financial difficulties, including a reported R4.15 billion loss last year, and part of the effort to address this includes ending their sponsorship of the league.

Big Boost in Prize Money

In a recent press conference at the PSL offices in Parktown, Khoza also revealed a major increase in the prize money for the season.

The champions will now take home R20 million, which is a R5 million jump from last season’s DStv Premiership prize.

This increase is part of the league’s push to make the competition more rewarding for the teams and players.

A Unique Journey for the Betway Trophy

Khoza spoke about the delay in the trophy’s arrival, explaining that the process is taking time due to its intricate design and historical importance.

He hinted that the trophy would be a symbol of South Africa’s best and would tell a story of its own.

According to Khoza, it’s more than just a trophy – it’s a journey that will reflect the cultural richness of the country.

He encouraged the media to “watch this space” as the trophy’s final form is yet to be revealed.

A Monumental Moment Ahead

“It’s going to be something monumental, something historical – the best to come out of this country,” said Khoza.

He emphasized that the journey of finalizing the trophy would be a process in itself, and that the media would be invited to witness its development along the way.

Khoza’s message was clear: the trophy is not just an object, but a piece of history that will be worth the wait.

Orlando Pirates Dominate Early in the Season

On the field, Khoza’s team, Orlando Pirates, is currently leading the Betway Premiership, having won all seven of their games so far this season.

They are looking strong to break Mamelodi Sundowns’ seven-year hold on the league title.

Sundowns, who are in second place, trail Pirates by six points but still have a game in hand, though they suffered a surprising loss to Polokwane City FC a couple of weeks ago.

The excitement is building, and fans are eagerly waiting for both the unveiling of the new trophy and the outcome of this season’s thrilling competition.
