Megyn Kelly has accused The View co-host Sunny Hostin of hypocrisy after bodycam footage revealed that Hostin attempted to persuade police officers not to issue a trespassing citation to her son, Gabriel Hostin.
During an episode of her SiriusXM show, Kelly said she understood Hostin’s reaction as a mother trying to protect her child but criticized what she described as a contradiction between Hostin’s public statements about privilege and her actions during the encounter.
Kelly said she would likely respond similarly if one of her own children were facing trouble, but argued that Hostin crossed a line by emphasizing her celebrity status and legal background while speaking with officers.
Hostin Arrives at Scene and References Her Television Career
The controversy began after Gabriel Hostin, 24, was stopped by police near Metro-North Railroad tracks in Westchester County, New York.
Bodycam footage showed Hostin arriving at the scene and immediately identifying herself to officers as a co-host of The View and a former federal prosecutor.
“My name is Sunny Hostin and I’m one of the co-hosts of The View and I’m a former federal prosecutor,” Hostin told officers.
She also pointed out that her son was a Harvard graduate and had no criminal record, arguing that the situation was an isolated mistake rather than a reflection of his character.
Hostin repeatedly described Gabriel as a responsible young man who was not someone who typically found himself in trouble.
Police Issue Citation Despite Hostin’s Pleas
Police said Gabriel was detained around 8 p.m. on June 16 after officers found him on the right-of-way area of active railroad tracks, where signs prohibited trespassing.
Gabriel reportedly explained that he was out running and entered the area through an open gate, believing the location could be used for training.
Although officers acknowledged his cooperation and lack of criminal history, they explained that being on active railroad property was a serious violation.
One officer told Gabriel that the offense could have resulted in an arrest but said they were reducing the matter to a trespassing citation because of the circumstances.
When Gabriel questioned whether the citation was necessary, officers responded that they were required to proceed.
Kelly Accuses Hostin of Double Standards
Kelly argued that Hostin’s response reflected what she called “sanctimony and hypocrisy,” claiming that Hostin frequently criticizes privilege while benefiting from her own success and status.
The commentator suggested that Hostin’s public profile and influence may have provided advantages that many other families do not have.
Kelly specifically questioned whether Hostin’s celebrity status played any role in Gabriel’s admission to Harvard, arguing that the same privilege Hostin criticizes may have helped her family.
She also claimed that Hostin overlooks the opportunities she has received through her career and success in America while frequently discussing issues of inequality and privilege.
Hostin Defends Son and Requests Case Dismissal
Following the citation, Gabriel Hostin was ordered to return to court in New Rochelle, New York, on July 31.
Hostin, who is representing her son, reportedly submitted a letter to prosecutors requesting that the case be dismissed.
In the letter, she described Gabriel as a Harvard graduate with no criminal history and argued that he did not knowingly trespass.
She claimed that her son entered the area while training as a runner after seeing what appeared to be a suitable incline for exercise.
According to Hostin, the gate was open and the warning sign was not clearly visible.
She argued that Gabriel’s actions were the result of a misunderstanding rather than intentional misconduct.
Debate Intensifies Over Celebrity Status and Equal Treatment
The incident has fueled discussion about whether public figures receive different treatment when dealing with legal issues involving their families.
Supporters of Hostin say she was simply advocating for her son and providing officers with information about his background.
