Kaizer Chiefs are edging closer to bringing Thabo Cele’s spell at the club to an end after new head coach Fernando da Cruz reportedly made it clear that the midfielder does not feature in his plans for the upcoming season.

Discussions are underway to terminate the player’s contract, despite it still having two years remaining.

The move signals another major squad reshuffle as the Soweto giants continue to rebuild ahead of the new campaign.

Coaching Change Leaves Midfielder on the Outside

Cele arrived at Naturena with high expectations after joining as a free agent following his time in European football.

His arrival was viewed as a significant addition to the midfield, and he quickly impressed during the early stages of his Chiefs career.

However, his fortunes changed last season when he struggled for regular game time under the club’s previous coaching setup.

The arrival of Da Cruz has now further complicated his future, with the new manager deciding to move in a different direction.

Training Separately as Exit Talks Continue

Reports indicate that the 29-year-old is no longer taking part in the first team‘s regular training sessions.

Instead, he has been working separately while negotiations continue over the terms of his departure.

Chiefs are believed to be exploring different options, including reaching a mutual agreement to end his contract or securing a transfer should a suitable offer arrive before the transfer window closes.

PSL Clubs Monitoring the Situation

Although his time at Kaizer Chiefs appears to be coming to an end, Cele is unlikely to be short of interest.

Several clubs in the Betway Premiership are reportedly monitoring his availability, with AmaZulu FC among the teams linked with a potential move.

His experience in both South African and European football could make him an attractive option for clubs looking to strengthen their midfield ahead of the new season.

Chiefs Already Strengthen Midfield Options

As Cele prepares for a possible exit, Kaizer Chiefs have already reinforced their squad by bringing in Tanzanian midfielder Adolf Mtasingwa Bitegeko.

Supporters recently got a glimpse of the new signing during the club’s final preseason outing against Scottland FC in the Toyota Cup, suggesting the club is already planning for life without Cele.

Cele’s Numbers in Chiefs Colors

Since joining Kaizer Chiefs in January 2025, Cele made 36 appearances across all competitions.

During that period, he was unable to register either a goal or an assist.

Last season alone, he featured in 17 matches, including 15 league appearances, but struggled to establish himself as a regular starter.

With his departure now looking increasingly likely, both player and club appear ready to begin new chapters ahead of the 2026/27 season.
