Orlando Pirates are heading into one of the most demanding periods of their season, with the Buccaneers scheduled to contest major matches across domestic and continental competitions throughout October.
The month begins with a high-profile showdown against Mamelodi Sundowns in the MTN8 final before Pirates turn their attention to the CAF Champions League and domestic league campaign.
The demanding run concludes with the eagerly anticipated Soweto Derby against Kaizer Chiefs.
MTN8 Final Provides Immediate Test
Pirates’ biggest fixture of the month arrives on Saturday, 10 October, when they meet Mamelodi Sundowns in the MTN8 final.
The match is scheduled to kick off at 18:00 and represents a major opportunity for the Buccaneers to claim silverware.
Facing Sundowns in a final will provide an early indication of Pirates’ ability to handle the pressure of a month packed with high-stakes matches.
CAF Champions League Campaign Takes Pirates Abroad
Just one week later, Pirates will switch competitions as their continental campaign begins in earnest.
The Buccaneers are scheduled to travel to face African Stars on 17 October at 17:00 in the first leg of their CAF Champions League second qualifying-round tie.
The Namibian side will provide another challenge as Pirates attempt to move closer to securing a place in the next stage of Africa’s premier club competition.
Domestic Fixture Creates Scheduling Pressure
Pirates are also scheduled to face TS Galaxy on 18 October at 18:00 in a PSL Matchday 8 fixture.
However, the league encounter is expected to be rescheduled because it falls just one day after Pirates’ continental fixture against African Stars.
The congested calendar means careful squad management will be crucial as the Buccaneers attempt to compete on multiple fronts.
Pirates Host African Stars in Second Leg
The continental battle will resume in South Africa on 24 October, when Pirates welcome African Stars for the second leg of their qualifying-round tie.
Kick-off is scheduled for 17:00, giving the Buccaneers an opportunity to finish the tie at home and secure their progress in the CAF Champions League.
The result of the first leg will determine the pressure surrounding the return fixture.
Soweto Derby Brings October to a Dramatic Close
The month concludes with one of the biggest fixtures in South African football.
Pirates will host Kaizer Chiefs on Saturday, 31 October at 15:30 in the latest edition of the Soweto Derby.
The encounter comes only a week after the second leg against African Stars, meaning Pirates could enter the derby having already played a demanding continental tie.
The rivalry will add another layer of pressure to an already challenging period.
Pirates Face Five Major Fixtures
The Buccaneers currently have five fixtures scheduled across three competitions during October:
- 10 October, 18:00: Orlando Pirates vs Mamelodi Sundowns — MTN8 Final
- 17 October, 17:00: African Stars vs Orlando Pirates — CAF Champions League, second qualifying round, first leg
- 18 October, 18:00: Orlando Pirates vs TS Galaxy — PSL Matchday 8, subject to rescheduling
- 24 October, 17:00: Orlando Pirates vs African Stars — CAF Champions League, second qualifying round, second leg

A Defining Month for the Buccaneers
With a cup final, two continental matches and the Soweto Derby all packed into the same month, October could prove significant for Pirates’ season.
The Buccaneers will need to balance their pursuit of silverware with their ambitions in the CAF Champions League and PSL, while managing a demanding schedule that could test the depth of the squad.
For Pirates supporters, the prospect is clear: October promises major matches, high stakes and little room for complacency.
