Bafana Bafana have added another emphatic result to their record after producing a 5-0 victory over Eritrea in their AFCON 2027 qualifying campaign.
Pitso Mosimane’s team delivered the commanding performance in Cairo on 30 September 2026, with the result placing Eritrea alongside Guatemala and Congo as opponents South Africa have defeated by a five-goal margin.
The latest victory also underlined some of the most dominant performances recorded by the national team in recent years.
Seychelles Remain at the Top
The biggest victory among the four results came against Seychelles in October 2018.
South Africa overwhelmed the island nation 6-0 on 13 October during an AFCON qualifying match. The six-goal margin remains the largest victory highlighted on this list.
The result formed part of Bafana Bafana’s successful push to qualify for the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations and saw South Africa completely dominate their opponents.
Guatemala Suffered a 5-0 Defeat in 2010
Before the more recent victories over Congo and Eritrea, Bafana had already recorded a 5-0 success against Guatemala.
That match took place on 31 May 2010, just days before South Africa hosted the FIFA World Cup.
The 1996 AFCON champions were preparing for the global tournament on home soil when they produced a convincing win over the Central American side.
The result remains one of Bafana Bafana’s most notable pre-World Cup victories.
Congo Beaten by Five Goals
South Africa matched that scoreline more than a decade later when they defeated Congo 5-0 on 11 October 2024.
The victory came during another AFCON qualifying campaign and gave Bafana another commanding result on the continental stage.
The five-goal margin subsequently became a benchmark that South Africa would match again in 2026.
Eritrea Becomes the Latest Victim
Eritrea became the latest team to suffer a 5-0 defeat at the hands of Bafana Bafana when the two sides met in Cairo on 30 September.
Relebohile Mofokeng was among the standout performers, scoring twice as South Africa took control of the contest.
Oswin Appollis was equally influential, registering three assists in an impressive individual display.
The result followed South Africa’s 2-1 victory over Guinea in their opening Group D qualifier, giving Mosimane’s side two wins from their first two matches.
Bafana’s Four Biggest Wins on the List
South Africa’s four most emphatic victories highlighted in the record are:
- 6-0 vs Seychelles — 13 October 2018, AFCON qualifier
- 5-0 vs Guatemala — 31 May 2010, international friendly
- 5-0 vs Congo — 11 October 2024, AFCON qualifier
- 5-0 vs Eritrea — 30 September 2026, AFCON qualifier
The Seychelles result remains the standout victory by margin, while the three 5-0 wins demonstrate that Bafana have repeatedly produced five-goal victories across both competitive and friendly fixtures.
Eritrea Victory Strengthens AFCON Campaign
The latest result has given Mosimane’s team another strong start to their AFCON 2027 qualification campaign.
After beating Guinea and then recording a five-goal victory against Eritrea, South Africa have made an early statement in Group D.
The Cairo performance will now be remembered alongside some of Bafana Bafana’s most emphatic recent victories as the national team continues its pursuit of another appearance at Africa’s premier international tournament.
