The University of Buenos Aires (UBA) has announced plans to award Argentina captain Lionel Messi an honorary doctorate in recognition of his extraordinary football career and his broader contribution to the country.
The prestigious distinction was unanimously approved by the university’s Higher Council and is scheduled to be presented to Messi on Tuesday, October 6, shortly before Argentina’s farewell fixture against Benin at the Monumental Stadium.
UBA Recognises Messi Beyond Football Statistics
The university described the honorary doctorate as its highest form of honorary recognition, saying Messi represents qualities including excellence, perseverance, humility and ethical conduct.
UBA said the decision was not based solely on the forward’s extensive list of individual and team achievements. Instead, the institution highlighted his role as a prominent representative of Argentina and its culture on the international stage.
Rector Ricardo Gelpi said the university wanted to acknowledge the person behind the records and trophies that have defined Messi’s career.
Argentina Captain’s International Success Highlighted
According to the university, Messi’s leadership of the Argentine national team was central to the decision.
The institution specifically cited Argentina’s victories at the 2021 Copa América, 2022 Finalissima, 2022 FIFA World Cup and 2024 Copa América as major milestones in his international career.
UBA also referred to Argentina’s second-place finish at the 2026 World Cup as part of the national team’s recent international record.
Rector Praises Messi’s Character and National Representation
Gelpi said Messi’s influence extends beyond his performances and statistics, describing him as a humble and determined figure who has become an ambassador for Argentine popular culture and national identity.
The rector said the university wanted its recognition to reflect the significance of Messi’s representation of Argentina, both through football and through his conduct away from the pitch.
UBA Vice-Rector Highlights Messi’s Values
UBA Vice-Rector Emiliano Yacobitti similarly emphasised the values Messi has come to represent while playing for the national team.
Yacobitti said Messi had represented the Argentine shirt with courage and respect while helping elevate the country to the highest level of international football.
He added that the honorary doctorate should be viewed as more than an award for sporting accomplishments, describing it as a tribute and expression of gratitude from the university on behalf of Argentine society.
Honorary Doctorate Carries Wider Significance
The university explained that honorary doctorates are part of a longstanding international tradition through which major academic institutions recognise individuals whose achievements and influence extend beyond their professional careers.
In Messi’s case, UBA said his impact on Argentine sport, culture and national representation justified the exceptional academic honour.
Award Comes Ahead of Argentina Farewell
The presentation is set to take place at a significant moment in Messi’s international career.
The 6 October meeting with Benin at the Monumental Stadium is expected to serve as Messi’s farewell appearance for Argentina. The honorary doctorate will therefore coincide with an occasion celebrating one of the most accomplished periods in the country’s football history.
