Melanie Lynskey has challenged claims about how much she earned per episode of Two and a Half Men, explaining that her salary was significantly lower than figures circulating online.
The 49-year-old actress responded to a fan discussing the cast’s reported earnings in the comments section of a video featuring her former co-star Holland Taylor, who recently spoke about her pay on the podcast Alchemy with Anthony Mason.
The fan claimed Lynskey eventually earned between $200,000 and $300,000 per episode, while Taylor received $75,000. The comment also cited reported salaries of $1 million to $1.8 million for Charlie Sheen, $575,000 for Jon Cryer and $300,000 for Angus T. Jones.
Lynskey said the figures attributed to her were inaccurate and wanted to correct the claims.
Actress Says She Earned $20,000 at the Start
In her response, Lynskey explained that she appeared in only 63 of the sitcom’s 262 episodes.
She said her starting salary was approximately $20,000 per episode, with an increase of around five per cent each season. More than half of her appearances were in the first two seasons.
Her highest payment came during the final season, when she received approximately $43,000 for a single episode.
Lynskey also pointed out that the reported amounts did not represent what actors actually took home after deductions.
She explained that agents, managers, business managers and taxes reduced her earnings, leaving her with roughly half of the amount paid.
Lynskey Says Sitcom Earnings Helped Support Her Career
Lynskey said she appreciated the opportunity to work on Two and a Half Men, explaining that the income helped her pay her mortgage and household bills while allowing her to continue appearing in independent films.
However, she described reports suggesting that she had earned millions from the sitcom as absurd.
She concluded her response by saying that Taylor’s recent comments about her own pay had encouraged her to speak publicly about the issue.
Holland Taylor Says She Never Received a Pay Rise
Taylor recently revealed that she was never offered a salary increase during her six seasons as a regular cast member on Two and a Half Men.
The 83-year-old actress, who played Evelyn Harper, the mother of Charlie Sheen and Jon Cryer’s characters, said she was paid the same amount she had received for a television series several years earlier.
Despite receiving four Emmy nominations for her performance, Taylor said producers never gave her a raise, even though she believed such increases were normally offered as a courtesy.
She also claimed that CBS wanted to avoid increasing her salary significantly.
Taylor Explains Why She Ended Her Regular Contract
Taylor recalled deciding in 2009 that she no longer wanted to remain under contract with the sitcom.
She said producers were surprised by her decision and told her they could not offer her more money.
Taylor responded that she was not interested in continuing under the existing arrangement, even if the production could afford to pay her more.
Instead, she offered to return occasionally as a guest performer if the show wanted her to appear.
She eventually made appearances throughout all 12 seasons of the series, which ran from 2003 to 2015.
Taylor also noted that Cryer had quadrupled his salary when his contract was renewed, while she had not received a comparable increase.
Jon Cryer Previously Discussed His Salary Compared With Sheen’s
Cryer also spoke about the pay differences between the leading actors in the sitcom during the 2025 Netflix documentary aka Charlie Sheen.
The actor said he earned approximately one-third of Sheen’s salary. Forbes previously reported that Sheen was making $1.9 million per episode at the height of the programme’s success, while The Hollywood Reporter reported that Cryer earned $620,000 per episode.
Cryer recalled that Sheen negotiated a much higher salary while his personal life was deteriorating.
He compared the situation to North Korean leader Kim Jong-Il, saying Sheen’s behaviour during negotiations had resulted in the actor receiving enormous financial offers.
Cryer also said CBS had been willing to spend an extraordinary amount on Sheen because the network had already sold additional seasons of the programme.
Sheen’s Departure Changed the Sitcom’s Line-up
Sheen left Two and a Half Men in 2011 after publicly criticising the show’s creator, Chuck Lorre.
The actor was subsequently dismissed from the comedy and replaced by Ashton Kutcher.
The salary revelations from Lynskey, Taylor and Cryer have brought renewed attention to the differences in compensation among the programme’s cast members.
