Max Verstappen turned a 100-driver influencer go-kart race into a remarkable display of overtaking on Wednesday, charging from the rear of the grid to victory in just 14 laps at Silverstone.
The four-time Formula One world champion was deliberately placed at the back of the field for the exhibition event, which was broadcast live on Disney+.
His challenge was to work his way through a grid packed with social media creators, journalists and other online personalities.
Despite starting behind all 100 competitors, the Red Bull driver immediately began making progress once the race got underway.
Rapid Rise Through the Field
Verstappen’s first lap set the tone for what became a frantic contest.
By the time he completed the opening circuit, the Dutchman had already moved into 37th position.
His progress included an incident involving Daily Mail Sport presenter Henry Williams, who had qualified 73rd.
Verstappen passed Williams at the second corner after running off the circuit, a move that provided one of the more contentious moments of the race.
The crowded field made conditions particularly chaotic, with drivers Verstappen passed being eliminated from the race as he continued his charge toward the front.
Fourth Place Arrives by Lap 10
The Verstappen procession continued as the race unfolded.
With every successful overtake bringing him closer to the leaders, the Formula One star had reached fourth place by lap 10.
Rather than settling for a podium position, Verstappen continued hunting down the remaining drivers in front of him.
His final target was Dutch journalist Jacky Martens, who remained ahead as the race entered its closing stages.
Victory Sealed on Lap 14
Verstappen eventually completed his extraordinary comeback on the 14th lap when he overtook Martens to take the chequered flag.
The victory meant the 28-year-old had gone from the very back of a 100-kart field to first place in a remarkably short race.
For Verstappen, the event offered a return to the discipline that formed the foundation of his motorsport career long before he became one of Formula One’s leading drivers.
Verstappen Enjoys Return to Karting
Reflecting on the race, Verstappen admitted that seeing 100 karts ahead of him on the starting grid initially made the challenge appear daunting.
He said the disorder of the opening lap quickly changed his outlook, however, and he soon felt confident that he could work his way through the field.
Once he found his rhythm, Verstappen said the experience became increasingly enjoyable as he hunted down the competitors ahead of him one by one.
The Dutchman also described the event as a reminder of his early racing years, when karting was central to his development as a driver.
Silverstone Provides the Setting
Verstappen praised the circuit after completing the unusual exhibition race, describing Silverstone as a beautiful and well-designed track.
The event gave him an opportunity to race away from the highly controlled environment of a Formula One weekend and return to the simpler mechanics of karting.
He said he had enjoyed the day and was pleased to finish it with the victory.
Williams Praises the Experience
Henry Williams, who found himself among the drivers Verstappen overtook, also looked back positively on the experience despite the controversial nature of his elimination.
The Daily Mail Sport presenter described the race as great fun and said Verstappen had been a good sport during the event.
The exhibition ultimately provided a very different racing challenge for Verstappen, who had to negotiate an unusually crowded field rather than the familiar competition of a Formula One grid.
