Ukraine is continuing emergency response operations following a large-scale wave of Russian missile and drone attacks that struck several parts of the country overnight, causing casualties, infrastructure damage, and fires at multiple locations.
Officials reported that Kyiv was among the hardest-hit areas, with rescue teams working through the aftermath of extensive strikes that targeted the capital and surrounding regions.
Kyiv Endures One of the Largest Overnight Attacks
According to Ukrainian authorities, more than 60 missiles were launched toward Kyiv during the overnight assault. Across the country, Russia reportedly fired a total of 70 missiles and deployed 611 drones in one of the largest combined aerial attacks in recent months.
Emergency services have been deployed across affected districts of the capital to clear debris, extinguish fires, and search damaged structures for survivors.
Initial reports indicate that at least four people were killed in Kyiv, while 28 others sustained injuries during the attack.
Historic Cathedral Damaged by Fire
Among the sites impacted during the strikes was the historic Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra complex, one of Ukraine’s most significant religious and cultural landmarks.
Authorities said a fire broke out at the Dormition Cathedral after the attack. The cathedral, whose origins date back to the 11th century, is regarded as one of the country’s most important Christian heritage sites.
Emergency crews later succeeded in extinguishing the blaze on the cathedral’s roof, preventing further damage to the historic structure.
Secondary Strike Hits Rescuers in Kharkiv
In the northeastern city of Kharkiv, officials reported another deadly incident after Russian forces allegedly targeted an area where emergency workers were responding to an earlier strike.
The attack occurred at the site of a damaged industrial facility where firefighters and rescue personnel were conducting operations.
Authorities said five people were killed in Kharkiv, while nine others were injured. Emergency services continued recovery efforts throughout the day.
Dnipro Infrastructure Also Targeted
The city of Dnipro also suffered damage during the overnight attacks.
Officials reported strikes on the grounds of a railway station, a college campus, and several industrial facilities. Assessments of the damage and possible casualties were still ongoing as emergency teams worked across the affected locations.
Multiple Regions Come Under Attack
Beyond Kyiv, Kharkiv, and Dnipro, attacks were reported in numerous regions across Ukraine.
Areas affected included the Kyiv region, Dnipropetrovsk region, Donetsk region, Zaporizhzhia, Sumy region, and Mykolaiv region. Local authorities in several communities activated emergency response measures as air raid alerts and explosions were reported throughout the night.
Calls for Stronger International Support
Ukrainian officials argued that the scale of the latest attacks demonstrates Moscow’s intention to continue military operations despite ongoing international diplomatic efforts.
As leaders of the Group of Seven (G7) gather for a summit, Kyiv is urging allied nations to increase pressure on Russia and expand military assistance, particularly advanced air defense systems capable of intercepting ballistic missile threats.
Ukrainian authorities stressed that additional defensive support remains critical for protecting civilian populations and essential infrastructure as aerial attacks continue across the country.
