NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte held high-level talks with Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre in Brussels on Thursday, focusing on preparations for the upcoming NATO Summit scheduled to take place in Ankara.
The meeting highlighted Norway’s growing strategic importance within the Alliance and its expanding defence commitments.
The discussions come at a critical moment for NATO as member states prepare to align priorities on collective defence, regional security challenges, and ongoing support for Ukraine.
Norway’s Role in NATO Operations Earns Strong Praise
During the meeting, Rutte commended Norway for what he described as its substantial contribution to Allied security operations.
He pointed to Norway’s involvement in NATO air policing missions, its participation in Forward Land Forces, and its leadership role in hosting large-scale military exercises in the High North.
According to NATO leadership, Norway’s geographic position and operational experience make it a key contributor to the Alliance’s presence in the Arctic region, which is increasingly viewed as a strategic security frontier.
Arctic Region Gains Strategic Weight in NATO Planning
Rutte stressed that the Arctic and High North are becoming more central to NATO’s long-term defence strategy. He emphasized that Norway’s expertise in operating in harsh northern environments plays a critical role in shaping the Alliance’s regional posture.
He described Norway as an essential partner in maintaining situational awareness and operational readiness in a region where geopolitical competition and security risks are rising.
Defence Spending Surge Signals Stronger Commitment from Oslo
The NATO Secretary General also highlighted Norway’s recent increase in defence spending, noting that its core military budget rose to more than 3% of GDP in the past year, up from just over 2% in 2024.
He described the increase as a strong signal of commitment to collective defence and urged other NATO members to follow similar investment paths.
Rutte added that Norway has indicated plans to further increase defence spending in the coming years, reinforcing its role as one of the Alliance’s most committed contributors.
Ukraine Support and Drone Cooperation Highlighted
The talks also focused heavily on the ongoing war in Ukraine, where Norway has played a significant supporting role since Russia’s full-scale invasion began.
Rutte praised Oslo’s contributions to NATO-led support efforts, including its involvement in the PURL initiative aimed at strengthening Ukraine’s defence capacity.
He also welcomed a recent bilateral agreement between Norway and Ukraine to deepen defence cooperation, including initiatives to expand drone production and related military technologies.
According to NATO, this partnership is expected to enhance Ukraine’s ability to defend itself on the battlefield while sustaining its long-term resistance against Russian military pressure.
