Kaizer Chiefs have been eliminated from the CAF Confederation Cup after losing 3-2 on penalties to Zambia’s Red Arrows in Durban on Friday, prompting criticism from supporters directed at midfielder Mduduzi Shabalala.
Amakhosi entered the second leg of their second preliminary-round tie needing to overturn a 1-0 defeat suffered in Zambia. Bradley Cross scored in the return match to level the aggregate score at 1-1 and send the contest to a penalty shootout.
Chiefs had opportunities to secure a more comfortable advantage during the match, but Shabalala failed to convert two clear chances. The missed opportunities became a major talking point among supporters following the club’s elimination.
Supporters Criticise Shabalala and Chiefs Management
Following the defeat, Chiefs fans took to social media to express their disappointment, with some blaming Shabalala for failing to take his chances.
One supporter, posting as @Hybreed, wrote: “Whoever cursed Kaizer Chiefs, we’re sorry.”
Another fan, @lucaskagiso, expressed frustration with the team and its management, writing: “Serves us right. I am glad we are out. Don’t want false hopes. Now its up to you KC management to see what you do with this deadwood and clueless technical team.”
The supporter also called on the club’s management to assess the squad and technical team following the disappointing result.
Shabalala Faces Questions Over Missed Opportunities
Shabalala received particularly strong criticism from @KB_Ramasimong, who questioned the midfielder’s development and repeated failure to convert clear scoring opportunities.
“Mdu Shabalala …. That guy is a Kwamahlobo type player, he is not improving. How many years has he been missing CLEAR ONE ON ONE chances?….. Even last season he was one of reason we didn’t make KO,” the supporter wrote.
The comments reflected frustration among some fans over the midfielder’s finishing and his contribution during important matches.
Other Fans Defend Shabalala’s Importance to Chiefs
Not all supporters agreed that Shabalala should be blamed for the continental exit.
Fan @MakuaKgothatso argued that the midfielder remains important to the team despite his missed chances.
“According to most of Kaizer Chiefs fans, when a player miss a clear chance, he is a cow and he does not deserve game time. Without Mdu Shabalala, Chiefs is not functioning,” the supporter wrote.
The differing reactions highlighted the division among Chiefs fans over the midfielder’s performance and his role in the team.
Chiefs Turn Attention Back to Domestic Competition
With their CAF Confederation Cup campaign over, Chiefs must now focus on their domestic commitments.
The elimination has prompted questions from supporters about the team’s performances, its missed scoring opportunities and the decisions made by the technical team.
Chiefs’ management and coaching staff will face further scrutiny as the club looks to respond to the disappointment and continue its domestic campaign.
