John Frieda built his reputation in the beauty industry through a range of haircare products designed to tackle frizz and make unruly hair easier to manage.
The Frizz Ease collection, introduced in 1988, became one of his most recognisable achievements and helped establish his name among consumers.
Frieda developed the range alongside American haircare entrepreneur Gail Federici after identifying a gap in the market for products specifically designed to control frizzy hair.
Its original serum quickly became the collection’s signature product, helping people achieve smoother hair without needing to visit a salon. The success of the serum also led to the expansion of the brand into shampoos, conditioners, styling sprays and other treatments.
The Original Serum Remains Central to the Range
The first Frizz Ease serum was created to smooth unruly strands and protect hair against humidity, offering a sleek finish that could be achieved at home.
Over its 38-year history, the product has undergone changes, with the modern collection offering different formulations for various hair types.
The Original 6 Effects Serum is designed to control frizz, smooth flyaways, add shine and improve the manageability of hair.
Although the range has expanded considerably, the serum remains one of its best-known products.
Frizz Ease Expands With Products for Different Hair Types
The collection now includes products aimed at people with different hair textures and styling preferences.
Among its established offerings are:
- Frizz Ease Dream Curls Curl Reviver Mousse: Developed for naturally curly and wavy hair, the mousse helps define curls, reduce frizz and maintain bounce and shape.
- Frizz Ease Secret Agent Touch-Up Crème: Designed to smooth flyaways and control unwanted frizz, the finishing cream can be applied throughout the day to refresh hair without requiring a complete restyle.
- Frizz Ease Miraculous Recovery Shampoo and Conditioner: This combination targets dry, damaged and frizz-prone hair, helping improve manageability while leaving it feeling smoother and more nourished.
- Frizz Ease 3-Day Straight Styling Spray: The heat-activated spray is designed to help maintain a straighter, smoother hairstyle over several days while providing protection during heat styling.
John Frieda Also Built a Career as a Celebrity Hairstylist
Alongside his success as a haircare entrepreneur, Frieda developed a reputation as a celebrity hairstylist.
His clients included Diana, Princess of Wales, Madonna, Nicole Kidman and Scarlett Johansson.
His work with high-profile figures helped establish his standing in the beauty industry, while the Frizz Ease collection brought his name to a much wider audience.
John Frieda Sold His Haircare Business for $450 Million
In 2019, Frieda sold his haircare product company to Japanese conglomerate Kao in a deal valued at $450 million, equivalent to approximately £260 million.
He retained ownership of five salons operating across London, New York and Los Angeles.
The continued availability of Frizz Ease products in beauty retailers, supermarkets and online stores has kept the collection familiar to consumers decades after its launch.
